Pro-Edwards 527 Ad Hits TV Airwaves in Iowa Today
WP political blog, "The Fix," by Chris Cillizza
Pro-Edwards 527 Hits TV Airwaves in Iowa Today

Over the past three days, Democratic presidential hopefuls John Edwards and Barack Obama have publicly squabbled over an outside group with ties to Edwards that is funding a series of ads obliquely touting his candidacy. The group at the center of the controversy is known as the Alliance for New America and was first reported in The Sunday Fix. The group is backed by a number of state and local branches of the Service Employees International Union and is being advised by Nick Baldick, who managed Edwards's 2004 presidential campaign. The Alliance for a New America has already spent nearly $600,000 on a flight of radio ads in Iowa that hew closely to the Edwards campaign message. Bu, what prompted Obama's ire was a report that the group was planning to spend $750,000 on a television ad buy over the final ten days before the Iowa caucuses.

The Fix has obtained the script of the ad. It will hit the Iowa television today.

"The price of dependence on foreign oil; Health care in crisis; Government run by corporate lobbyists; Isn't it time someone had a plan to take them on?" asks the ad's narrator. The ad goes on to detail the "Edwards plan" that would -- among other things -- "Ban campaign cash from lobbyists; End tax breaks for Big Oil; Stop job-killing trade deals; Stand up to insurance companies for real health reform."

At the ad's end, the narrator urges: "Ask all the candidates for their plans to level the playing field."

Asked about the ads, Shane Allers, the executive director of SEUI Local 284 out of Minnesota, insisted that the group is not simply an Edwards shadow vehicle but rather "an issue organization with its own distinct agenda -- to ensure candidates are asked how they will make the middle class and issues like health care their top priority in Washington." Sure, but the truth of the matter is that the only ads the Alliance has run to date tout Edwards's plans. And the spots directly echo the "people versus the powerful" message of the Edwards campaign.

That's not to say, however, the Alliance is doing anything terribly new or, frankly, all that controversial. Remember that in the final days of the 2004 Democratic campaign, an independent organization called Americans for Jobs, Health Care & Progressive Values savaged former Gov. Howard Dean (Vt.). Robert Gibbs, who had served a stint as Sen. John Kerry's (Mass.) presidential communications director, was affiliated with the group. (Gibbs is now the communications director for Obama's presidential campaign.)

While Edwards is probably not thrilled about all the attention the Alliance is drawing, we're pretty sure that the $750,000 they will spend on positive ads touting his plans for the country will more than make up for any ill feelings. In politics, money talks. And, ANY candidate would trade a few days of dicey press coverage for three-quarters of a million dollars in free campaign ads.

1. My thoughts:
I have mixed feelings about 527s that run ads that focus on issues and have a positive message about a candidate and/or party --

If the 527 is being funded by BIG donations from relatively few sources then I think it should be disallowed because it is a way for wealthy interest groups to sway public opinion while hiding behind a vague name like "Americans for Jobs, Health Care & Progressive Values" - the group that savaged Dean.

If the 527 is being funded by small dollar donations - like MoveOn.org ads, then I think the ads on behalf of a candidate are great. Similarly, if the Alliance for New America is funded by donations from SEIU members or funded by a SEIU funds that the members decided, by a democratic process, to use for this purpose then I think that is great, too.

I think that Edwards should have not dismissed all 527s out of hand -- I am concerned about this because, if he wins the Dem nomination, given that he has decided to go with public funding for his campaign, we will need the 527s running ads to counter the GOP-funded commercials.

2. Your last sentence is incorrect.
Edwards will only use public financing in the general election if the Republican nominee does the same.

3. Really? I don't mind being told I am wrong about that - I would like to be wrong.
So what is Kos freaked out about? Do you remember when Kos posted a diary saying that he would not support Edwards because he won't have adequate funding during the general election?

:(

8. I don't begin to know what Kos' problem is.
There are Edwards ads running all over the place in Iowa. I get almost daily direct mail from either Edwards or some group endorsing him.

It is true that he is using public financing in the primaries. He will only use public financing in the general if the Republican candidate does the same.

There is really nothing to worry about here.

14. the worry
is the period between the primaries and the convention. He doesn't get to spend GE money until the convention declares him the official nominee.

15. The DNC can move the convention - it is possible.
I KNOW there will be howls of pain and protests and fisticuffs -- but it can and must be moved if Edwards looks like he is winning the primaries. The last state primaries are in May - so the convention could be in early June. That would mean that Edwards will spend down his money from now until June.

Thank you for the explanation about why some people, including Kos, are concerned.

16. logistically
that just isn't possible. What would happen instead is that the dnc and liberal 527's would fill the gap.

By the way, this wouldn't keep me from voting for Edwards if I had the chance.

9. I'm pretty sure Edwards would have $50 millon to spend in the GE until after the convention.
Is that incorrect?

12. Kos doesn't like Edwards -
He's for Dodd and then Obama. There have been several dairies that he's done that scream his preference and dislikes.

11. Fine with me - it's not bashing anyone or spewing lies...
I kinda wish Edwards hadn't said a word about 527s.

13. I thought the Obama camp was angry because this ad was originally
touted as nasty. It was, and is posted here somewhere.

If this is a positive ad for Edwards, good for him. I just hate it when inter-party attacks are happening.
