NH-Sen: Bill Shaheen's Obama Stunt Hurting His Wife's Senate Run
by Todd Beeton, Wed Dec 26, 2007 at 01:00:12 PM EST

The latest ARG poll of the New Hampshire senate race (558 RVs, Dec. 16-19, MOE +/- 4.2%) shows John Sununu pulling ahead of Jeanne Shaheen for the first time since Shaheen declared for the seat in September. Since ARG and Rasmussen polls showed Shaheen leading Sununu by 5% in September, Sununu has consistently been behind by double digits, but now the tables appear to have turned.

Shaheen (D) 41
Sununu (R) 52
Undecided 7

As you might expect, this result appears to be a direct consequence of Bill Shaheen's not so subtle attack on Barack Obama earlier this month that led to his stepping down as New Hampshire co-chair of Hillary Clinton's campaign.

From Congressional Quarterly:

The name "Shaheen" appeared in the national news just a few days before the poll was taken, but it wasn't Jeanne Shaheen that made the headlines. Her husband, longtime Democratic presidential strategist Bill Shaheen, announced Dec. 13 that he was quitting his co-chairman position on Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton 's presidential campaign after making comments about Barack Obama and drug use that evoked strong criticism.

Dick Bennett, president of American Research Group, told CQ Politics that he believes some poll respondents were influenced by the Shaheen flap because Democratic voters, especially those supporting Obama, may have negatively reacted to reminders that the Shaheen family has already signed on to Clinton's campaign.

2. I think Shaheen will win next year

There are still months left, plenty of time for improvement. People aren't going to care about this next year, not with all the important issues out there.

4. Is Sununu for another term any worse than having that cretin Shaheen roaming around Capitol Hill?

I can live with Sununu...

5. I don't trust that ARG poll, just as much as I don't trust the one giving Hillary a huge Iowa lead
If Shaheen were running against Gregg then I'd believe it might be a tight race. But New Hampshire is trending dark blue and Shaheen is still likely comfortably ahead of Sununu.

Likewise, Hillary isn't ahead by double digits in Iowa.

14. I wouldn't even care if Jeanne Shaheen loses, to be perfectly honest
She seems quit okay, but her husband is a bitch. Just for that stunt about Obama, I'll be silently hoping she loses. Karma is a bitch!!

21. Best case scenario
Jay Buckey beats Jeanne Shaheen in the primary and goes on to beat Sununu.

24. She was a nasty hypocrite to Gen. Clark in '04. Between her and her hubby, I could care less, too.
Even better, I hope she loses the primary to a real liberal progressive who goes on to win the Senate seat against Sununu. Both of them
are DLC power players of the worst kind and I couldn't be happier that she's tanking. :toast:

7. Last I saw of Jeanne she was being pulled off the air by Team Kerry
Edited on Wed Dec-26-07 11:00 PM by BeyondGeography
so inept was she at serving as a spokesperson for his campaign. Sununu won by a fair margin last time and got the best of her in at least one of their head-to-head debates which was shown nationally on C-Span. Billy has made a challenged candidate's job even tougher. Hope it was worth it.

8. Yeah, too bad jean shaheen's
husband, and long line of hillary's surrogates.. did themselves and their candidate no honor.

It's obviously better for the senate if jean wins over the repuke, sununu, but I hope bill shaheen has learned his lesson.

15. I must be a genius
I posted a thread about this maybe a day or two ago, but nobody would engage me in the topic. I was turned off and i thought it would hurt her senate run.

And another body bag for team Clinton. When will they learn that we are all DEMOCRATS?

Did they really think a sleazy stunt like this would not have karma coming back to them?
