Anyone else hearing this sentiment uttered...
"After 8 years of Bush and all the damage, why are the democrats choosing NOW to try and make history?"

Ugh. I've heard some variation on this sentiment more than a few times over the past month. Obviously from this statement you can guess what these people are referring to and it annoys me to hear it. Especially since it's from people who lean dem although not what I would call fully partisan. So they should know better but also aren't rabid news/politics junkies so I guess they're just hearing too much in sound bites. Still it's irritating to have to convince people who should be on our side no matter what given their feelings on Bush and the past 8 years or horrors.

1. Heard it just yesterday
... and yeah, it's a bunch of bull.

I don't think that most Clinton supporters are voting for her because she's a woman, nor do I think that most Obama supporters are voting for him because he's black. They're the two current frontrunners because their ideas and ideals have resonated with the people, not because people "want to make history".

2. Honestly, I think it's more fear than anything else...
Nobody I've heard who says this doesn't like Clinton or Obama. And they'll probably vote for either one as the nominee. I think they're saying this more out of fear of losing again and out of a lack of faith in the american people (can't say I entirely blame them there, but still).

3. Isn't it funny how Democrats always catch it for not being bold...then catch it when they're bold?

4. Actually it's a valid point
There are many dems who would love to see a person of color or woman, or hell, even a woman of color in the White House, and I am one of them. But, I don't think the time is right. I don't think this country is ready for a change from a white man leading them, especially not when the country is so messed up. It's sort of like you prefer the devil you know to the devil you don't know. A woman or person of color is an unknown quantity, and while the country is ready for change, I don't think they are ready for that big of change. I don't have a lot of faith in the general public. And dems want the White House in 2008, there is concern that if a woman or person of color is nominated that they will not get it.

This is one of the many reasons I became an Edwards supporter. I don't have faith in the public. Hell, have you gone to Romney's web site? He sounds sane, and he could pick up a lot of disgruntled dems. Remember those Reagan dems? It's nice to think that dems will vote for whoever gets the nomination, but in the real world, that's not going to happen.

5. Well, I'm as cynical as they come....
Personally I take it a step further. I just think that the american public really are gullible and really are big babies and that in the end, too large a segment are going to act and vote like the Chris Matthews of the world and wanting a big strong daddy type in there, which republicans are always going to brand themselves as.

So ultimately I just don't think it matters who the dem nominee is because they are always going to get painted in the same shade of being less than strong and less than manly.

6. People are just nervous. A president hasn't been chosen by the people in this country
since 1996.

The system is broken, and many fear we are headed for our third stolen presidential election.

If it is stolen again, can't you just hear the talking heads say "The country wasn't ready for a woman" or "The country wasn't ready for an African American." That is not to say they won't come up with some bullshit reason our candidate is not elected no matter whoever it is. But their task will be easier with either Hillary or Obama. And I think many are worried.

We'd better be ready for the Republicans to attempt another theft. The stakes are too high. We're talking about powerful people facing serious jail time here. And I'm not quite sure what we will be able to do if the third presidential election in a row is stolen, other than attempt a national strike, which would fail since Congress has given Bush all the tools necessary to declare marshal law and set up a dictatorship.

Why in the hell haven't our "leaders" addressed this problem since we took back the House and Senate?
