Biden on Bhutto: 'This is a terrible day'

The campaign of Sen. Joseph Biden, a Democratic presidential candidate, issued the following statement in response to the murder of Benazir Bhutto, the Pakistani opposition leader.


Washington, DC – Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (D-DE) issued the following statement today after the assassination of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto:

“This is a terrible day. My heart goes out to Benazir Bhutto’s family, friends and followers.

“Like her father before her, Benazir Bhutto worked her whole life – and gave her life – to help Pakistan become a democratic, secular and modern Muslim country. She was a woman of extraordinary courage who returned to Pakistan in the face of death threats and even after an assassination attempt the day of her return, she did not flinch. It was a privilege to know her these many years and to call her a friend.

“I am convinced Ms. Bhutto would have won free and fair elections next week. The fact that she was by far Pakistan’s most popular leader underscores the fact that there is a vast, moderate majority in Pakistan that must have a clear voice in the system. Her assassination makes it all the more urgent that Pakistan return to a democratic path.


“This fall, I twice urged President Musharraf to provide better security for Ms. Bhutto and other political leaders – I wrote him before her return and after the first assassination attempt in October. The failure to protect Ms. Bhutto raises a lot of hard questions for the government and security services that must be answered.

“I know that Benazir’s followers will be tempted to lash out in anger and violence. I urge them to remain calm – and not play into the hands of the forces of destruction. I urge Pakistan’s leaders to open a fully accountable and transparent investigation. We must find out who was behind this and bring those responsible to justice. And the United States should offer any assistance necessary, including investigative teams, to get to the bottom of this horror.

“The way to honor Benazir Bhutto is to uphold the values for which she gave her life: democracy, moderation and social justice. I join with the Pakistani people in mourning the loss of a dear friend.”

I say, the REASON he held a press conference was so that THIS statement would find it's way to the people of Pakistan;

and I am most certainly not exuberant about Bhutto's assassination. I just think that it is moments like this that really highlight certain candidates strengths. I started the whole punctuation thing because I thought that whoever it was that made the comment about two exclamation points in the post's title was pretty ludicrous. It was a sarcastic statement and then it looks like we just got a little bit goofy!

I don't think anyone is excited or happy about Bhutto's assassination. We just believe that Biden has the most foreign policy experience and expertise and that in the world situation that we are currently in, he is the best man for the job. Most qualified, period.

Given his position as head of the SFRC, it would be expected. The fact that he has likely known her for years, it would be strange if he did not put out a public statement. It is a classy, well written statement. Not everything revolves around the Presidential race. I was watching MSNBC or CNN when I first heard about the assassination of Bhutto and it seemed sort of skewed to make the republicans get more air time. First, the talking head read a statement from Hillary Clinton. No extra graphics on the screen and no picture of Hillary. Next they had a statement from Obama with his picture and a graphics showing his statement as it was read. Giuliani (sp?) got the same treatment the first time around. The they show an actual interview with Romney. Later as somebody previously mentioned they had Giuliani on for a live interview. I stopped watching then so I don't know if they had more Democrats on later. It was also interesting that the Democrats in their statements pretty much eulogized Bhutto, whereas the Republicans seemed to see her death as an opportunity to polish up their national security credentials. Republicans were all 'be afraid', fight the terrorists and this is why you need us as President. The Democrats were along the lines of this is a tragedy, Mrs Bhutto was a great leader, we send our condolences.

It really amazes me how lucky the Republicans are. Maybe it is my imagination but it always seems in the last 25 years like when they are doing bad in an election cycle some 'national security' related event happens to bring the focus back to their favorite talking points.
