Benazir Bhutto told Bush I "You are creating a Frankenstein"
“CIA Director William Casey his backing to a plan put forward by Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, to recruit people from around the world to join the Afghan jihad. More than 100,000 Islamic militants trained in Pakistan between 1986 and 1992, in camps overseen by the CIA and MI6, with the SAS training future al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters in bomb-making and other black arts".

"In the late 1980s, Pakistani President Benazir Bhutto, feeling the mujaheddin network has grown too strong, tells President George H. W. Bush, “You are creating a Frankenstein.” However, the warning goes unheeded."

9. Yet the article starts on about the funding of the mujadin to fight
off the Soviet invasion in the 80s. Saddam had been in power since 79

13. True and it's a pattern that almost every President has chosen
From the Contras, to Iraq, to the mujahdeen. That was why a John Kerry win would have been so significant - this is what he risked never having a political career to argue against at the end of his SFRC testimony in 1971 and when he fought against the Reagan and Bush Central American wars.

5. As long as they were anti-communism, we didn't give a shit who they were
There were a lot of people in this country who thought we should have sided with the Nazis to defeat communist Russia. Look at all the scumbags, death squads, and two-bit dictators that we aided during the 60s-80s to fight communism.

8. Now we've replaced anticommunist with antiterror.
The problem is that our support of these dictators is what aids the terrorist in recruitment. You'd think we'd learn from our past mistakes.

12. The GOP and neo-cons always have to have some "enemy"...
behind every three and rock. The get into power by the visceral use of fear. They have nothing else.

Fear is a powerful motivator, and many social programs, as well as the Dept of Ed, SS, the EPA, the FDA, the Forest Service...you can go down the list, have been cut to the bare bone or nearly exterminated, to feed the war machine.

Fear, constant fear, of varying degrees, and Americans suck it up at every opportunity...rather than face the BS that this administration tosses out and stop it, people would rather live under the notion that they will be attacked by turbaned hordes from the Middle East. The whole situation is ridiculous.

So here we sit, watching our very country turn ito a police state, and cower under what the neo-cons have told us is the "truth". In the mean time bin-Laden runs free, "dead or alive" apparently means "alive and well", so that the fear can be stoked from time to time.
