Oprah's fans fume: 'Stop pushing Obama down our throats'...
One posting on her site, Oprah.com, accused the talk diva of being a traitor. (By Thursday, that message string had attracted more than 12,000 views.) Another poster told Winfrey to "stop pushing Obama down our throats." (There were 3,000 hits logged on that one.) http://www.calendarlive.com/tv/cl-et-cause28dec28,0,7852369.story?coll=cl-tv-features

"First of all I want to say that I am a HUGE Oprah fan," one poster wrote. "I love what she stands for. She is a strong woman changing the world. However, I have been extremely disappointed with her recent touring with Barack Obama. It is a manipulation and an abuse of her power and influence on the American culture.

"Let the American people form their own opinion, Oprah."

But he also sounded a note of caution: Don't overdo it. "Celebrities can be seen as carpetbaggers," Bragman said.

On account of I'm suddenly uh...I mean...a longtime fan of hers. Her biggest fan.

I'll just be posting some concerns I have, as her longtime biggest fan, about her support of Clinton. Really, just a concerned longtime Streisand fan here. That's all.

31. "Let the American people form their own opinion, . . . "
Apparently they can't since she appears to have them all under some kind of mind control.

Wonder if this is the same mind control exerted by Iowa and New Hampshire that everyone complains about afterward. The one that
suppresses free will and compels the primary electorate to vote for the winners in these two small and relatively insignificant states.

27. That's the damn problem with Oprah. She wants America to
vote for this man simply on her recommendation. In other words "trust me". Bullshit! 51% of americans were fooled in 2000 in the same way oprah is pushing obama. In 2004 we had a candidate that should have beat bush so bad, but no Kerry was so damn polite. I can beat you on one thing when HRC has her convention there will not be any of this"let not critize" our opponents. Hell, that convention will give America an opportunity to know what an HRC presidency will bring and sale them on the idea that an HRC presidency will once again place America in its rightful place. There will not be any of this touchy feely bs.

30. I posted a comment there, one time only. I'm not Steadman.
I know that it is hard for O plus O supporters to accept, but many of us were offended by her race baiting card . She laid down that card with her MLK quote. She left out the part about white people who marched, ran underground railroads, fought for equal rights and those who died fighting against the terrible injustice of slavery. Its time to wake up and bond together. This is no longer just about Black or white, this is now a class warfare fight. I do concede that there is, to this day, ugly racism, but the line has widened to include the rich against the middle class and poor. IMHO she hurt him more than she helped him by playing the race card. It was very offensive to many of us.

36. When I was a wee one, there were no Afro-American women on television.
Edited on Sat Dec-29-07 10:30 AM by Old Crusoe
You didn't hear about Afro-American women millionaires much either.

There were police dogs snapping at Afro-American men and women in some U.S. cities, though. We heard about that.

Oprah Winfrey represents the happy outcome of struggle and sacrifice to change the way people think.

She's an entertainer. A tv host who has significant impact, ability, and wherewithal. People like her.

Reagan was also an entertainer and, I'm pretty sure, a white male. We didn't hear many Republicans squawking that a mere actor aspired to the presidency. Why are we hearing Oprah's audience squawking that she has endorsed Senator Obama?

These folks can still vote for whichever candidate they want, but they should withdraw critcism of Oprah Winfrey for exercising her right to do the same.

Just my take.

40. Hi, ClarkUSA. From published polling in IA, NH, and SC, it seems as if
Edited on Sat Dec-29-07 10:31 AM by Old Crusoe
Obama's numbers are holding well. My guess is they were likely pretty firm before Winfrey showed up. He is a motivating presence in the party IMO because he uses language to elevate the national circumstance and asks for focus on conflict resolution. As best as I can tell, those are the high-voltage components of the motivating presence in Sen. Obama.

The party could use more of that, not less.

Senator Clinton's motivating presence is historical. Well past the debate of whether a female can lead, she's within reach of leading the free world. Her polling has come down some since early fall, but has not fallen away as Giuliani's has, as McCain's has from further back. Her numbers have held and she represents a name our grandchildren will reference when they talk with their daughters about the past affecting the future. A lot of women are going to show up for Senator Clinton to set the table for that future talk.

Edwards' motivating presence is his brash emphasis on unions and poverty, hardly mainstream issues for unanimous affirmation in U.S. politics these days. They border on being third-rail issues and Edwards is lunging for them both. The unsaid variable in that emphasis is a rejection of our priorities in their present form and an insistence that those priorities be changed to a more inclusive model.

The Pukes aren't running any candidates with any of those big-picture frames of reference. Not one.

While I don't watch Winfrey's program, I have the sense that she is uplifting to a lot of women and some men and feel that it is beside the point to begrudge her her success, and it's mean-spirited as well. She kicks butt. Who wouldn't want her in their corner?

48. ClarkUSA, you ask the million-dollar question. I love making predictions
in politics, but this cycle is a fractal mess. The more polling that's published, the less clear the race becomes.

I'm not as enthusiastic about Sen. Clinton as I am with the other 7 Democrats but will honor fellow Democrats' choice if they select her prior to my state's primary.

The Pukes' field is the proverbial "orgy of eunuchs." Ain't nothin' happenin.' With Tancredo out, there are 7 left standing, and for the most part it's an array of philistine yahoos, zombified panderers, war-mongering chest-thumpers, craven Jesus lickers, and outright thieves, with a significant overlap in several categories for most candidates.

I'm kinda jealous that Iowans get first dibs in the process, but exhilarated, too, that the hour is here at last to cast the first votes that will end 8 years of the Bush administratin.

I'd give the edge to Obama and Edwards due to second-choice preferences, though. :applause:

Your take on the GOP candidates are fun. I hope Romney is the nominee. He'd be the easiest to beat. Fortunately, it looks as if
the moneyed establishment wing of the GOP have coalesced behind him. Huckabee will be his VP, I'll bet. What do you think?

51. That's a close read on the Republicans. If Romney wins in Iowa, I guess he'll
win in New Hampshire if he can fend off McCain.

Giuliani is fading and in addition to all the negative PR, his health is now flickering as a potential issue. With 9/11 he had become a 1-note Johnny and now he's like a vampire at sunrise. I think he's done for.

Huckabee for veep sounds plausible. It will comfort the fundies who are freaked out by Willard's Mormon creds. And, on the plus side, it will repel a lot of New England Republicans who don't feel that either Romney or Huckabee are their kind of people.

If we all survive the primaries, I think the White House is within reasonable reach. I want a Democratic president filling the next Supreme Court vacancies (likely 2 in the first term alone) and with some luck, a veep nom who can move into contention for the following 4-8 years. Sixteen blue years would go a long way toward mending what Bush has torn asunder.

Edited on Sat Dec-29-07 11:55 AM by ClarkUSA
Business and religious conservatives would rejoice as they again work together for a plutocratic theocracy. Let's hope Iowans choose wisely
among the Democrats: high positives/likability often goes hand-in-hand with electability in the GE. Republicans are counting on using
polarization to drive out their voters in November. Democrats need to deny the RNC that GOTV strategery because that'll be the best way
to ensure a smoother ride down to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, in my opinion.

54. Agree. They'll throw everything they can at us and our ticket. They can't
advance as far or as fast on merit, so they use wedge issues and appeals to fear and ignorance.

And of course the idiot media are there to sing the chorus.

I'd like to see chairman Dean hire an ad agency to put a few tv ads on reserve -- so we can hit back with some devastating punches. In most ways we didn't pick this fight, but if the GOP opts for the MO your post cites -- and you're right, they will -- it would be fair game to knock them on their intemperate and divisive asses.

For every infraction of the dignity of the process, we hit them harder right back.

I'd much prefer a higher plane but I want a Democratic White House even more.

Hopefully, Democrats won't have to relive and/or face the 15-year RNC oppo-research file on the Clintons in the GE. Ugh.

74. I love the idea of a Jan. 4th Des Moines REGISTER headline that says,
"Dickering Hawkeyes Select (_____)_ in Primary Contest"

--I'm ripping off your idea and language, but it just struck me as fun. A young up-and-coming field reporter wouldn't have too much to complain about for stuff to cover this last few weeks and these next few days.

And pretty soon we hear from the voters.

64. OC, I think you are right! Many women, white and black, watch Oprah. and I know from personal
contact that they respond to her in a very positive way. She touches them in a way we cannot quite quantify here.

You are so right about the Republicans. They have nothing. Their party is so void of any rationale about being president it is almost funny. All they can really talk about in the GE is immigration, and if we immunize ourselves against that, we're home free.

Torn between two lovers, Edwards and Biden, as I now feel I am (hmm, maybe a bit too fanciful there, but...), I am pretty happy. I have settled on what I feel are the two best candidates. I don't vote until February, so something will have been settled by then, I pray!

We shall see what we shall see!

Ciao!

69. CTYankee, awfully good to cross paths with you on DU's boards.
Well, as you can guess already, I'm happy with your two choices, and see a lot of good on the blue team for 08 and not much promise or potential on the red team.

My great fantasy is a landslide -- a ballot-long landslide -- that buries the Republicans halfway between the cynical incompetence of George Bush and the cretinous zealotry of Jim Dobson, and city, county, state, and federal Democrats resume a generations-long control of our government.

70. Great fantasy!
My great dream is a president who is loved and respected around the world. I also dream of a landslide so that our new president has a shimmering opportunity to work out and implement universal health care, immigration reform, a decent global trade policy and on and on. Maybe we're at a tipping point, O.C! My only fear is the damage that could be done before we get to elect these people. I am worried sick about Pakistan and Bush is letting this thing slide right down the tubes. It is my dystopia, incontrast to my utopia!

What's your bet for Iowa? Mine is Edwards, Clinton, Obama with Biden a strong 4th. Can't even guess about NH yet!

71. I sure like your political vision for the world, and I hope you are on board
to volunteer for whichever of our candidates survive the brawl in IA, NH, and beyond.

I think our chances look pretty good against the GOP in November, but you're right -- that's still too long for Bush to be fiddling with the dials.

The polling out of Iowa this fall has been chaotic. I think I'll go the safe route and predict a smashing landslide by Mike Gravel, or perhaps Dick Gephardt as a write-in favorite!

It occurs to me that Dick Gephardt might make a pretty interesting choice as our veep nom. We could use a boost in Missouri. Elections there are usually cliff-hangers for Democrats. And he's out of office so we wouldn't lose a Senate seat or Congressional seat. He wouldn't be my personal favorite, but he might help us win just the same.

72. Gephardt is an interesting thought! Maybe so...
Personally, I don'tthink VP candidates change the picture too much, altho a bad one can sink a campaign.

Oh yes, I'll be on standby to help out in the campaign! I'll do what I can over the summer and early September. I'm putting together a trip to Malta in early October, but back in plenty of time for the General. I missed Election day in 06 (never again!) in the U.S. as I was in Rome but I got the International Herald Tribune there and of course CNN. In the small towns in Tuscany and Umbria no such luck. I found out about the Senate takeover while in Siena and what a dance I did in the Campo!

This year my Italian journey is in May, kind of out of the way -- Turin and Bologna, with an extension in Venice. My homage to the Piemonte and Emilia-Romagna for the food!

I'm really excited about our whole primary season and hope for the best (while preparing for the worst, I guess!).

Ce vediamo!

79. I'm too nerdy for most folk. This trip to Malta is with Elderhostel and
includes mini lectures on the history/culture before every excursion and then lots of walking. I'm in heaven with that but some folks would find it boring. I'd love to see DUers there, tho...

Actually, my Turin visit is gonna be all about coffee and chocolate. A little concoction at the historic Al Bicerin coffee bar features a drink containing coffee, chocolate and heavy cream! Venice will be mostly art, with a quick trip on a train to Padova to see the Giotto frescoes at the Capella degli Scrovegni. Hope I don't get on the wrong train, as I almost did between Lucca and Montecatini Terme in 06! Gotta really brush up on my Italian!

I'll give a big report to DU on both trips...

86. Hi, Horse with no Name. Julia. Wow, I hadn't even thought about that
for years and years. We've come a long way on the public airwaves and podiums, etc.

I look at our side this cycle and see a female, an Afro-American, and a Hispanic in the hunt for the White House. Over on the red team, I don't see any of those demographic groups represented.

Unless we count Alan Keyes. (Which hardly seems worth the trouble!)

There's a pretty good chance that one of our three demographic groups there could be on the ticket. We're favored to do well now and I think one or more of those groups' support would maybe give us a much bluer election night map.

The Republicans have let a lot of groups down. I hope we can reclaim those voters' loyalties, and then earn their votes.

Obama IS a Muslim. Muslim law states if you are born into it by means of the father, you ARE a Muslim.

Leaving Islam punishable by death: Mohammed said, "Whoever changes his Islamic religion, kill him." Koran, Vol. 9:57

58. A "HUGE" Oprah fan saying, "Let the American people form their own opinion, Oprah"?
Yeah, sure. If that person's REALLY a huge Oprah fan, it's because of the importance s/he places on her opinions. The poster's full of it.

77. It's deplorable, isn't it.
The lengths some will go to, to win...... at least it's nowhere near as bad as the voter registration scandals of 2004. Now that was a mess.

66. that's silly --- she can go campaign for anybody she wants
It's the media that's making a bfd out of it.

I'm for Edwards myself -- i don't care who Oprah's voting for, but Edwards has celeb (Tim Robbins, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitte) people for him as well. All's fair in love, war and politics.

However, she had to know that in this politically charged climate that her support for ANY candidate was likely to create a backlash.
