Love Barack, Like Clinton, don't mind Edwards, and would feel good about Biden.....and so....
I'll vote for Obama.

I'm voting for Obama because I'm tired of Status Quo boxed up thinking; tired of too many promises and unrealistic demands; tired of the fighting and divisiness and fake-ass calls to arm that gets us nowhere, and tired of people telling me who's electable. I know what I know, and because of this, Barack has my vote.

I think that nominating one who will excite the could-be voters who don't vote is the way to a win. Obama can and will do this. The lines in the South in particular will go round blocks after blocks. Folks will be bringing their sleeping bags and their water bottles, their mamas and their second and third cousins. Young people will be out in droves to participate in making history happen, and will stand by in eagerness as they witness the Ultimate American dream made real. The percentage of people that could vote but don't could bring in at least an extra 20-30% more voters realistically. Sure, there will be the racist voters out there, but I believe that the voters we gain will outnumber the number of voters we lose.

And if elected, Obama will use his oratory skill (and yes, he is skilled at this like none of the others) to bring back the power of the bully pulpit like it has not been used in a long while. When Obama's on the TeeVee, the channel will not be turned. Our President, if it is Obama, will rally not just the people of the United States, but he will rally the people of the world. They will listen attentively as well. Hell, they'll want to watch us make history too!

And yes....the world will be watching our general election with a large magnifying glass. The world will report on every goings on. Our media will simply not be allowed to get away with at much as they have in the past, because the world media (which is much more just than our own) won't let them get away with it. The world will wait for us to show them what American democracy is supposed to look like, and they will be watching closely to find each and every flaw.

With Obama as the Nominee, this will be an election like no other.

I do believe that President Obama will be able to work out compromises, and get most of what he proposes; he's a reasonable man with a reasonable vision and a reasonable approach to get it done. He's not offering me "pie in the sky"...and for that, I am grateful. I don't want a candidate who promises me the moon, only to hand me a few speckles of stardust and expects me to be satisfied. I want what I am told I'm gonna get and I feel that Obama is willing to give me what he said he's gonna give me...and maybe more, but never less.

Certainly, Obama has made mistakes; hell, they all have! But since I have to choose between the mistakes make on war and peace (that affects everything in our government) versus the mistake made on who a candidate chose to highlight in some campaign tour, I'll go with Obama's mistake.

But please know that at the end of the day, once the primaries are done, I really don't care so much who the nominee is, cause all of them have their defects, and all of them have got their good qualities...I just prefer the qualities that Obama offers better.

reading the NIE that stated there were no WMD in Iraq since 1995

5. I don't believe that.....
Edited on Sat Dec-29-07 06:51 AM by FrenchieCat
His life story is not "status quo"....
What he did with his career versus what he could have done with his career is not "status quo"
His stance on Iraq was not "status Quo"...

(edited to add someone else's opinion that I agree with):
... what do you make of Obama's career choices before politics? He was a community activist and organizer before and after Harvard law school...refusing much higher paying jobs to do so. Especially having been the Harvard Law Review president anything was open to him but he returned to Chicago and joined Miner's Chicago civil rights firm.

When he was elected to the state congress he continued to work there in summer when congress wasn't in session and didn't take pay for summer work.

Oh...and he was teaching Constitutional Law and asked to continue that once elected he held the class on Friday nights and early Monday mornings. The class was always full, he was well loved. A local paper reviewed his student evaluations for the decade he taght and only one professor got higher ratings there.
Students really stressed that they weren't just talked at but listened to...he helped them see things in new ways.

So what could we draw from all that? Seems like a lifelong desire to empower the little guys to pull themselves up, to help others learn to do the same thing, to draw people together to bring change. With his thorough knowledge and deep respect for Constitutional law he wants to also bring America back...
and so on.
The choice of work that mattered to him over high paying jobs is all the more impressive because he isn't wealthy.
Well a little wealthy now. CNN or someone made a list of cadidates financial worth. Obama was worth about a million...putting him last of the candidates in either party.

Barack Obama does not represent the status quo....no matter what you may think.

If you can say that and feel correct, than maybe you are the one being fooled, and I am correct.

12. I cannot argue with much of what you write
but I don't think a lot of people grasp the enormity of what has been done to this country over the past 7 years, both domestically and abroad. We don't just need to turn a page; we need to repair enormous damage. After Nixon we needed to turn a page. Carter did, then got ridiculed and marginalized by THE MACHINE. We need a veteran of the wars to take command. I liken it to Lincoln's choosing a new general in the midst of the civil war. He did not pick a bright young lieutenant.

13. Here's a little teflon
While many may have misgivings about an act of faith weighed against some evidence it is vital to remember that however good we think any or all candidates are, what will actually be done in office needs a lot of support for doing the rights things, presupposed but NOT guaranteed from anyone. I would suggest before people go negative on the fine post above that they remember what we are fighting for, not who.

There is no need to prove your hopes and faith. Time, alas, will accomplish that as they are tested by incredible difficulties. What we have to remember is what we hope for for and what we will demand of any nominee and what we hoe this party will become. If we stay together on that we won't be simply divided by our frail, but dedicated human leaders. And rendered disillusioned, divided, defeated and irrelevant.

15. Thank you for this post. Instead of posting RW drivel to attack others, you wrote a thought
provoking post, which I greatly appreciate.

Every time I see him speak, which isn't as often as I'd like, I try to catch him when I can, he's wonderful in his oratory and his vision.

And, he is certainly one who would galvanize the young people in this country, I love your description of the lines circling the blocks, in the South, to vote for him. :-)

Thank you!

I really think an Obama Presidency will change American and the world for the better. No other candidate has the same potential for truly tranformative change in our nation and the world.

Other than that (the really caring part), I'm in complete agreement with you. Great post.

31. Excellent post - and I agree almost 100%
except Hillary would be lower on my list. It's so nice to see a positive post by someone who actually knows what they're talking about when talking about Obama. What he has chosen to do with his life is one of the main reasons I like him so much, and I'm not sure many people realize what he COULD have chosen, and what he DID choose. To me, it says so much about him.

A breath of fresh air, someone who would most likely start off with most of the country, and most of the world, on his side - the thought of that just gives me hope. Hell no, he's not perfect and he's made mistakes, which, like you said, they all do, but I'm not looking for perfection, I'm looking for someone who can be a leader, with good judgement, and super intelligence.

I've read both of his books, and I Like his judgement, and his thinking on most things. I trust he would build a more than competent administration, be EXTREMELY well-advised when making decisions - and although many people don't seem to like it, it's obvious that he'll listen to all sides. He can, if given the chance, begin to heal this country, and he has spoken more than any other candidate about open, transparent government.

I am really, really hoping your scenario is what's going to happen - I want my country back!
