Hillary and Chelsea Clinton went to Iowa church today -- for 13 minutes.
Hillary attends Iowa church Posted: Sunday, December 30, 2007 2:52 PM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: 2008, Clinton
From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann

DES MOINES, IA -- Hillary and Chelsea Clinton went to church today -- for 13 minutes.

Clinton appeared at an 11:00 am service at Corinthian Baptist Church, a mostly African-American congregation here. After arriving about a half hour after the start of the service with daughter Chelsea and former Gov. Tom Vilsack in tow Clinton participated in a lengthy fellowship sharing (the second of the service), during which members greet each other and mingle. Approached -- but not mobbed -- by churchgoers who snapped cell-phone pictures of the senator, Clinton shook hands and posed for photos until the pastor herded the congregation back to their seats with a series of increasingly impatient "Amens."

Clinton made brief remarks at the service, beginning with a pious declaration of "this is the day the Lord has made." But despite her reverential tone, her remarks were not devoid of politics. Touting her years of work for the Children's Defense Fund, she said that she is running for president "in large measure" to ensure the future of America's children. "The American people need a president to be their champion," she said.

8. Apparently Obama did the same thing at the same church earlier this year
Earlier this year, Democratic candidate Barack Obama also joined the mostly black congregation.

He, too, left early.

17. Well, apparently, Hillary arrived 30 minutes late....
then basically interrupted the service....and left.

I'm sorry, and if Obama didn't stick around for the entire service his bad too, but I think it is disrespectul for a candidate to use a church service for political gain. If they do go to a church service, it should be to praise god, not have people praise them. They should at least stay there for the whole service instead of barging in the middle of the service with a big interruption.

I would be happy if candidates simply stayed out of churches, unless they are simply going there for their own spiritual needs.

To equate the church with politics is blasphemy from a religious view, and to use the house of god to advance one's own political ambition is as well.

I'm sorry, but does everything have to be a campaign venue? Everything?

She isn't even Baptist. This was a farce. It would be quite forgiveable for her not to attend church in her busy life. But to just go to church to do some politicing is blasphemous.

23. Don't most, if not all of the candidates do this?
I know Obama had previously stopped by the same church, and he's not Baptist either.

However, as a Christian, I don't feel the need to always attend churches of the same denomination if I'm away from home.

40. If Hillary wanted to go to a Baptist church...without all the cameras...fine
Edited on Sun Dec-30-07 06:42 PM by earthlover
I would certainly admire her for telling the press to bug off and let her have an hour or so to worship on her own.

But that is not what happened.

The whole thing was a campaign appearance. Not humbling oneself before god, but trying to make political gain out of god's church.

Hillary would never have been to that church in the first place if the caucuses were not Thursday.

But...would it be asking too much for Hillary to go to church on time, instead of barging in with full regalia and camera crew a half hour into the service and then leaving when the photo-op was over?

Did she even listen to the sermon?

38. Using the church for politics is blasphemous, no matter who does it
I know it is not just Hillary. Lots of other politicians have done it too. It is turning the church into a campaign venue.

I know there is hypocrisy in church. Lots of people go to church for reasons totally unrelated to god. Many to show off their clothes or to strike business "spheres of influence". This is no different.

I'm just sayin that politicians should just stay away from churches unless they want to pray. And if they pray, they should do it silently instead of having thousands of people witnessing it for their own political gain. It just makes a mockery out of religion and of the candidates as well, in my view. And needlessly.

22. If this was a Blues Brothers Event, it would have been worth it.
Wild singing, Hillary and Chelsea doing somersaults in the aisles. Vilsack playing the sax....THAT would have been worth some votes.

instead we get, "Welcome to todays service with special guest starts Hillary and Chelsea Clinton."

13 minutes is kind of an insult to the regulars. Its like saying, "I want your votes but I'm not wasting my time with you little people."
Worship is important to these people. She can't sit for an hour?

46. How long can it take? You suck, he died for you, repeat with the others, toss in some money and go
Is this any worse than what Obama continuously does with religion for personal gain? Is the fact that it's a largely black congregation an issue here?

Maybe she's just on the road and jonesin' for a fix...

What most of these little incidents show more than anything else is that the blowback can be nasty and the consequences are very unpredictable. Still, they both persist.

One thing I hope that gets driven home if Edwards wins the primaries is that he was the only one of the three who didn't greasily play the religion card. Maybe that'll buy us a little respite from the encroaching creep of theocracy.

47. Late for Church by the Driveby Truckers:
Late for church again
Never seem to be on time
Hear the bells as they peal through the holler
Doesn't sound like a friend of mine

A hundred eyes turn as I enter
Face burnin' as I walk past pews
I can tell they think I'm a sinner
Hear them whisper while I'm watching my shoes

Only seat left is right up front
I'm not a bit surprised
Back is soft but the seat is hard
Why can't they get it right?

Reverend Bob is pointin' his finger
Mom and Dad follow every last word
All this hollerin' makes me wonder
Does a whispered prayer get heard?

Reverend Bob is preachin' out thunder
Fire and brimstone pouring down
Me, I'm wondering what's for dinner
Waitin' for 12 o'clock to come round

Everybody's got their own Heaven
They all find it their own way

I am an angel

It was a campaign stop, she didn't go there to attend the service. She would have stayed 10 to 20 minutes regardless of whether the event was in a church, community center or personal residence. As would have any of the candidates.

There are PLENTY of legitimate things to criticize Clinton for, no need to use BS like this.
