The Daily Nonpareil, Council Bluffs, Iowa endorsement of Edwards says it all.
Iowans are humble people. We don't rock the boat. We don't complain. We do the work because it needs to be done; and at the end of the day, we know the difference between right and wrong and what is best for us.
I used to live in Logan, Iowa not far from Council Bluffs. Here is what the Council Bluff's newspaper has to say about Edwards.

. . . .
The son of a textile mill worker, Edwards has a better knowledge of the wants and needs of rural America. He can relate to the rural culture better than any of the other democratic candidates, as he is the only candidate with rural roots.

. . . .
There are no skeletons in Edwards' closet. He's been tested before as a U.S. senator and vice presidential candidate and rose above it. His biggest flaw - as other media organizations have pointed out - is that he doesn't attack his rivals. He smiles, sticks to his issues and continues to push forward.
. . . .
Edwards knows the agony a parent has when their child dies. His son, Wade, was killed in an automobile crash in 1996. He worked to heal, and therefore has a deep, personal understanding of the patience and endurance it takes to overcome such a tragic event. He can also appreciate the plight of parents who want their children brought out of harm's way.

. . . .

He also recognizes that there is no military solution to the war in Iraq and that it is time to bring our troops home and allow the Iraqi government to take responsibility for their country.

. . . .
We believe John Edwards is the strongest of all the Democratic candidates and the most viable in a presidential election.

The editor lauds Edwards' plan to enforce drug laws in rural America. This may cause raised eyebrows on DU. I have some experience with clients who have suffered from the drug abuse of a family member in rural and suburban areas in California. The drug of choice in those areas in meth. It utterly destroys the addict, leaving a shell where there once was a human being. Meth is a scourge in rural American. Edwards' willingness to help recovering addicts is yet another indication of the love of this man for his fellow human beings. Fighting drug abuse in rural America is not a cause that will make your poll numbers rise, but efforts in this area would mean so much to so many families. Imagine the sorrow of watching a family member, usually your mother and your wife, as if bewitched, self-destructing before your eyes. It is a horrible sight. And the shame of it in rural America where everyone knows their neighbor's business is heartbreaking.

I point out once again for the cynics on DU: Talking about the problem of drug abuse in rural America will not make your poll numbers rise. It might have in the Reagan era, but this is a subject that has become passe. Yet, Edwards is talking about it, not because it benefits him but because it will benefit people in rural America. Efforts in this area would mean so much to so many families.

Another reason to support John Edwards.

2. I sincerely hope Edwards wins the Iowa caucuses.
Not because he is "my candidate"... I honestly believe Biden, Richardson or Dodd might be the best candidate.

But JE is a better candidate that Obama, IMO, and he is a vastly better candidate than Clinton.

5. So do I. Edwards is by far the best candidate in my view.
I also like Biden, Richardson and Dodd and liked Obama until the last couple of days when he began to lose his focus if he ever had one.

7. These Three Sentences
Say it all.

"Edwards is a relentless trial lawyer who won his cases by outworking and out-preparing the competition. A trial lawyer wins by persuasion, and Edwards is a superior trial lawyer. Perhaps it is time to have someone with a superior power of persuasion in the White House. ...."

We the people, we the voters are the jury in '08 and the "system" is on trial.
Who do you want to represent "We the People" in the court of public opinion?

Imagine the power of the "bully pulpit" used to rally the American public
in common cause again. Just as Kennedy made us believe we could go to the moon,
I believe John Edwards could rally support and inspire us to become the America we
were promised by the Founding Fathers.

Americas reputation and maybe it's very existence depends on
returning to the rule of law and our Constitution.
What kind of lawyer do you want to lead that fight?
A scholarly lawyer who teaches and lectures?
A corporate lawyer who..well, you know what they do.
Or maybe, just maybe, a trial lawyer who represents people in need?

40. I'm nervous too... but Edwards has given me hope for our future.
Now it's up to the rest of the people in America to give us back the America we all deserve.

After 7 years of constant shock treatment from the BFEE, and a year of feeling betrayed by our Democratic leadership in Congress, the residual cynicism still renders me a bit nervous. Sadly, the only people I trust any more are myself, my wife, and John and Elizabeth Edwards. But that's still an improvement.

And, education.

VERY disappointing to hear Edwards talk about perpetuating a punishment system that DOES NOT WORK.

35. Sounds GREAT To Me.... But I Just Read That Kucinich Is Asking His
people to vote for Obama! Posted a link to Obama's site! This sounds a bit strange because Edwards and Kucinich are more alike than Obama and Kucinich!

Obama is very moderate to me and I find him more DLC!

37. Kucinich people think for themselves.
I think there is already a movement from Kucinich to Edwards. I just got an e-mail this morning from a friend who, until today, as far as I know was a staunch kucinich supporter. Based on Edwards' strong statement about the four things we need to remember in this campaign, she is apparently now supporting Edwards. At least, she was e-mailing the Edwards speech to me and other friends.

Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 07:44 PM by scarletwoman
I've also checked my most recent campaign emails from Kucinich and there's no mention of anything like that at all.

Where did you read that Kucinich is sending his people to Obama? Do you have a link?

Sorry, but it sounds bogus to me -- not that I don't believe that you read it somewhere, but wherever it was, I think they were posting bullshit.

39. Smart editor. I agree with his take on John Edwards knowing what
rural American wants. Also understanding the drug abuse in rural America and helping with recovery. That is the area I would like some more feedback on. I'm tired of the police being in charge of this area. Let's use qualified psych. professionals instead. I'm sure that if we would compare the criminalization track in place right now verses the use of mental health support, the price would still be the same.

I know there's no way that Kucinich will get the Dem nomination, and there's no way in hell I would EVER vote for HRC, and I absolutely can't stand Obama either -- so that leaves me fervently hoping that Edwards wins the nomination.

I sure hope my good neighbors to the south come through for Edwards.
