Fool us three times? Shame on us.
The news about the Edwards' campaign accepting half a million dollars from a 97 year old, apolitical widow (whose assets are controlled by an Edwards fundraiser) shouldn't be a surprise. It's not the first time Edwards' supporters in the legal community have run amok:

Attorney Geoffrey Fieger, best known for representing assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian, has been indicted on charges of conspiring to make more than $125,000 in illegal contributions to the 2004 presidential campaign of Democrat John Edwards
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/08/24/politics/main...

Tab Turner, his law firm, Turner & Associates of Little Rock Arkansas, and Edwards for President (the principal campaign committee of John Edwards’ 2004 campaign) have agreed to pay a total of $59,500 in civil penalties for violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act (the Act) and FEC regulations over prohibited corporate contributions and making contributions in the name of another.

2. From desperate to pathetic ....
what are the Obama supporters thinking?

Citing campaign violations that Edwards himself had nothing to do with NOR, could he legally, interfere with.

Wow! Is this your first campaign?

5. First campaign? You jest.
Edited on Sun Dec-30-07 09:24 PM by BlueDogDemocratNH
No. Ive been a staffer for national, state and local candidates for office ranging from state senate to president. I've provided legal compliance services to a congressional candidate. I've served on the city and state Democratic central committees. I've even authored legislation to strengthen my state's campaign spending and lobbyist disclosure laws.

Still want to get into a pissing contest about who knows the process?

The "Johnny didn't know" act doesn't fly. This Forger character has donated to Edwards campaign and to his leadership PAC as well as to the 527. He personally hosted a fundraiser for Edwards.

It's also a recurring pattern of behavior. When trial lawyers skirt the law, is it acceptable? I don't think it is.

Is Edwards legally liable for Forger's actions? Of course not. Should he be held politically liable for a pattern of unsavory fundraising activities surrounding his campaign and its affiliates? Absolutely.

8. Excuse me, but the Fieger story broke in August and went no where, and there is good reason for that
The real story is a about Alberto Gonzales misusing his office to illegally investigate all law firms who might have donated to Edwards.

Who are you?

9. You have a very impressive resume...
but just because Edwards is threatening the media darlings doesn't make your opinion more viable than that of any "ordinary voter". You are not winning any support for your candidate with such transparent attacks.

6. The Edwards campaign admitted guilt and paid a fine for the third item
"Edwards for President admitted it violated the Act by accepting prohibited in-kind contributions from Turner and Associates. Edwards for President also violated the Act by accepting a contribution made by Mr. Turner in the name of his brother and sister-in-law. In order to settle the matter, Edwards for President will not further contest this finding and will pay a $9,500 civil penalty."

Sounds like Edwards had something to do with it.

This your first campaign?

7. Joh Edwards campaign is being sleazy
I'm sorry if that's not what you want to hear, but it's what you need to hear.

By the way, can you tell me why Edwards state chairman in NH tried to gut the lobbyist disclosure law after taking several large contributions from lobbyists last fall? Just curious.

10. No they aren't. You're just trying to make them appear to be
sleazy. Up until now Edwards has been virtually ignored while Obama has basked in the limelight. Edwards just continued to spread his message and never tried to paint Obama or his campaign in anything but respectable terms. I expect the Obama campaign, and his supporters, to show the same respect to Edwards now that it's his turn to garner a little media attention.

11. I'm not "the Obama campaign"
I'm an Obama supporter, but I don't presume to speak for the campaign. I am a citizen, an activist and an elected official who has spent hundreds of hours over the last few years trying to put an end to the corrosive effect of money in the political process. When I see the Edwards campaign skirting the law, it bothers me.

Also, as a member of the bar, it angers me to think that this Forger character may be playing games with his client's funds. Were this a case of a small town attorney, a retired secretary, and money going to the local country club silent auction, the lawyer would have his hindquarters hauled in front of the state disciplinary board in 30 seconds!
