College Liberal's Presidential Endorsement...
Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 12:30 AM by College Liberal
I have been dreading this moment since i "officially" became a member of Democratic Underground. But, this is no time for the weak or the docile. Now is the time to stand and be counted. Before i tell you all who i have endorsed, i want to share a story with you all and give some reasons why i think this candidate is the right person for America.

Growing up i never would have believed that someone who looked like me would be able to do the unthinkable and succeed to the highest office in the land. Today, i believe that the unthinkable is only days away....

America is in need of a leader and not a politician. This candidate, i believe, can bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, the meek and the mighty, the heartbroken and the heartless, the daydream believer and the "doer."

I felt that this was the right person all along, and in my first post i wrote that i liked all the candidates who were running for president. I also wrote that it was a great time to be a democrat. The reason i wanted to wait, unfortunately, was that i knew when i "stood up to be counted" i would be even more attacked then i was before.

The person i endorse is, i believe, right on the issues that matter. They not only matter to me, but they matter to the "majority" of American's and this candidate can go "all the way"

This candidate is right on:
Civil Rights
Economy
Education
Energy & The Environment
Ethics
Faith
Family
Fiscal Policy
Foreign Policy
health care
Homeland Security
Immigration
Iraq
Poverty
Rural Issues and Concerns
Service (Community and otherwise)
Seniors and Social security
Technology
Veterans

Ladies and Gentlemen, I proudly endorse Barack Obama for President of The United States of America

"I chose to run because I believed that the size of these challenges had outgrown the capacity of our broken and divided politics to solve them; because I believed that Americans of every political stripe were hungry for a new kind of politics, a politics that focused not just on how to win but why we should, a politics that focused on those values and ideals that we held in common as Americans; a politics that favored common sense over ideology, straight talk over spin." ~ Obama

Edit for spelling

I'd like to see our Democratic candidates stop talking about gun bans and start talking about education and accountability instead.

60. Only 1 in 5 gun owners are hunters.
4 out of 5 own guns for target shooting and defensive purposes, which are the guns Obama supported banning in the past.

Around 1 in 4 Dems nationwide personally owns a gun, and the percentage of Dems and indies who own them is significantly higher in swing states.

14. Not true
He does favor gun control, but that thing about him wanting to ban semiautomatics comes from a stupid survey his campaign filled out about 10 years ago. He's denied ever having that position and never supported such legislation.

43. That interesting.

I was going on the info provided by On The Issues which might be the survey you mentioned. Do you have a link showing me Obama thinks differently?

Ban semi-automatics, and more possession restrictions

* Principles that Obama supports on gun issues:Ban the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.
* Increase state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms.
* Require manufacturers to provide child-safety locks with firearms.

46. Yeah. that's what I was talking about
Here's a more recent survey from his 2004 US Senate run:
http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2007/12/sweet_column_obamas_2003_iviip.html

35. Do you support legislation to ban the manufacture, sale and possession of
a. handguns?
While a complete ban on handguns is not politically practicable, I believe reasonable restrictions on the sale and possession of handguns are necessary to protect the public safety. In the Illinois Senate last year, I supported a package of bills to limit individual Illinoisans to purchasing one handgun a month; require all promoters and sellers at firearms shows to carry a state license; allow civil liability for death or injuries caused by handguns; and require FOID applicants to apply in person. I would support similar efforts at the federal level, including retaining the Brady Law.

b. assault weapons?
Yes.

c. ammunition for handguns and assault weapons?
I would support banning the sale of ammunition for assault weapons and limiting the sale of ammunition for handguns.

I haven't made a choice this time around, was leaning towards Obama because I think Edwards is fake and don't trust Hillary (don't know why, just don't). My gd tells me I should choose Obama for who he is and what he stands for and not because I don't like the others. Btw, she gives me hope for the future.

34. healthcare? Really?
I can't imagine that anyone seriously thinks any healthcare plan apart from Kucinich's is even palatable. Apart from the real, needed (to bring our country into the first world, and because it's morally the right thing to do) reform that single-payer universal healthcare is, all of the others are just more of what we have now. To some of us this is the single most important issue, and I think Obama has it all wrong.

and "homeland security"? Can't we please send this fascist term back to the dustbin of history where it belongs?

I'm glad that you've given this a lot of thought and hope you're very happy with who you vote for - I wouldn't have you vote against your interests, but on these issues I think you should reconsider. If you still like Obama the best, go with gusto to your polling station.

No point in winning if you're not happy with what you've won or what you had to give up to get there. If you like Obama's plan the best, I think that's great and you should vote for him! I just disagree. There's far too much talk about things like "electability" and who's polling what where with whom when we should be discussing candidates platforms. For making a reasoned and informed choice, I applaud you.

....don't want to do the things that I think need to be done? They won't get done then either. I'd rather fight for the things I want and maybe lose than waltz through a field for things I don't want. It's not that I think Obama is the devil - I like him more than Clinton and Edwards, for instance - but he just doesn't seem to be interested in what's important to me. I guess I'd vote for him, but I can't imagine being excited about it - I'd just be excited about voting against a republican.

Too often, even on here, people resort to name-calling and talking-points. I would never have people vote for a candidate I liked just so that candidate could win - I'd only have them vote for the candidate I liked because they agreed with me about them. That seems to be your stance (at least in your OP) too, and I respect that.
