Richardson Rising in Iowa

As we get closer to Thursday's Iowa caucuses, a new MSNBC/McClatchy/Mason-Dixon poll shows New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson's support surging to 12%, vaulting him back into contention in Iowa.

While 12% isn't enough to win, Richardson doesn't need to win Iowa in order to be successful. Surpassing any of the so-called frontrunners will be a victory for Governor Richardson and give his campaign a boost heading into New Hampshire, while dealing a serious blow to the opposition.

As we saw in 2004, when Iowa voters made up their minds late for John Kerry (who was still polling at 7% in mid-December), in 2008 not all Iowans have made their minds up yet.

The poll also found, however, that one in five Iowa Democrats and one in three Iowa Republicans said they could still change their minds before the caucuses on Thursday — the first big test in the state-by-state battle to choose candidates for the November presidential election. ..........

1. Richardson may be the fallback "comfort" candidate

when caucus-goers get cold feet about the "top 3".

All of the candidates have weaknesses but Richardson has the most and the most relevant experience, and accomplishments to go with it.

2. Richardson has experience and accomplishments, but lacks some big things. Biden is better imo.

He isn't an inspiring speaker at all. I had high hopes for him when he 1st got into the race, but he has been consistenly weak in the debates and in interviews. You need those skills to win presidential elections and get your message out there.

Biden has much of Richardson's experience and skills, but is an excellent communicator. I now wish that Richardson wasn't in the race, as I think Biden and Richardson (and Dodd for that matter) are splitting the "experience" vote.

3. I'm a-hopin..

that he gets it and that he's as good as I think he is.

Best resume doesn't necessarily mean the best candidate, or best Prsident, but it's a start. And a known quantity.

4. Bill Richardson is perhaps the most qualified of any candidate.

Not counting Joe Biden.
But I'm for Bill!
