By being too nice.

Especially, when Cheney said that the debate was the first time Cheney had met Edwards and Edwards just went silent.

1. I don't remember Edwards getting owned by anyone in '04 except rigged machines.
Owned by Cheney? Not in my book.

5. Cheney, big surprise, out and out lied during the debate
He claimed that he had never met Edwards before when in fact they had met at a prayer breakfast and there was video to prove it. Edwards didn't slam Dick on it, why I don't know but they had met.

10. That's the way I remember it, too.......
Cheney torpedoed that line of debate by denying that he had ever met John Edwards.

11. Edwards, to my memory, clearly won just by sitting next to the evil overlord
even the pundits (risking the fate of their children) agreed that Edwards did much better than the nasty surly Dick......... and then everyone stopped mentioning it ever again.

4. On the contrary, most people remember that debate for Edwards' bringing up Mary's sexuality...
in contrast to the GOP's stated positions on homosexuality and gay marriage -- which was hardly seen as being "too nice" to Dick.

He did seem totally unprepared for the way that Cheney blatantly lied and did nothing to call him on it.

9. I remember that and Cheney did own him
I expected him to come out much stronger. When Cheney lied and said he had never seen him in the Senate Edwards didn't challenge him, he just went silent. Edwards told him after the debate about the time they shared a dias and some function.

Edwards did mention Cheney's daughter and Cheney thanked him for being respectful about it.

I was very disappointed in that debate.

never figure out why he and Kerry kept bringing up the thing about Cheney's daughter being a lesbian - it made them look really stupid and petty - very disconcerting.

12. Being nice and being weak or ineffective are NOT the same thing
Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 02:47 PM by frazzled
Heaven knows, there's nothing wrong with being a nice person. It doesn't mean a person can't be forceful or stand up to unfair criticism,. A nice person will just do it with integrity, honesty, and clarity. But it doesn't have to diminish conviction or force.

What, we want someone who isn't so nice? Someone who is dishonest, impolite, and abrasive? That never won an argument.

This is a very weak charge.

Cheney is very good at being an evil lying sack of shit. If anyone thought he was good in that debate, well, to each his/her own.

18. "Nice Guy Johnny" totally blew it
He should have called Cheney on his bullshit about having never met before that night and he should have gone a step further on the lesbian daughter and asked Cheney if he agreed with Rush Limbaugh and most of the gasbags in the GOP Congress that she was unfit to be a parent?

20. Edwards won
I remember CNN ran a poll on line regarding who the viewers thought won. Edwards was far ahead and CNN then pulled the poll. I remember being shocked by that and just further proof how the corporate media were engaging in a conspiracy to support *.

24. Oh, yeah, because them on line polls are always reliable...More Dems may have
voted than freepers - I might have cast a vote for him too - but just to stick it to Darth Vader not because it was the truth.
The reality was that Kerry moped the floor with the chimp while Vader did the same with Edwards.

21. Edwards USED to play "Mr. Nice Guy," but like usual, he changed his position when he thought
it would be to his advantage. He's Mr. Populist Rage now. But I don't trust anything he says.

22. Darth Vader ran circles around little puppy Edwards - and didn't even look tired
Not only did he wipe the floor with him, but he didn't even have to look mean doing it...It was so casual, it gave me whiplash.

25. That was one of the most disappointing events in that whole campaign.
It should have been a slam dunk over Cheney with all his lies, but parts of it literally made me cringe - particularly the awkward way he brought up Mary Cheney's sexual orientation.

Bad memories. :(

But, he won the debate according to the news reports. Yes, we would all have liked him have wiped the floor with Cheney, but I can't put the blame on him.

28. Surprisingly Cheney outdid Edwards in the VP debate. I was totally
flabbergasted. Edwards is usually so strong on the fly. Cheney, on the other hand, is mean as a wicked witch of the west. I do NOT believe Edwards in all his legal battles with the big corps had ever come up against such unmitigated and purified evil before he took on the VP.

31. It was a draw, which is remarkable considering how hard it is to debate a pathological liar.
How exactly do you win a debate when American voters don't know any facts and your opponent is capable of lying without any showing any external signs that he is doing so? Most people rely on their innate sense of the sincerity of the speaker to guide them in politics, which works for some people but is useless on those who believe that reality is whatever they need it to be at that moment. Edwards made the attacks on Cheney, but Cheney always responded with his parallel universe version of the truth. Most people, including politicians, can't lie that naturally, but Cheney is clearly a pathological liar. And then afterward, the Republican team spent most of the time crying about how awful it was to mention Cheney's daughter. The fact that Republicans won that argument just shows how weak Democratic TV heads are.
