Black America should wake up. There is no doubt that out of all of our candidates, Obama has the most experience not only working with the black community, but bringing about actual change for the better in the black community. Show me a candidate who has a better understanding of the complexities of black life in this country. Please, convince me.

It may not help him straighten out foreign policy, but it matters to black folks. We have concerns unique to us and they may not matter much to you, but they do to us. And just for your information, Obama grew up middle class in a two bedroom apartment in Hawaii. He went to that fancy private school because he was bright enough to get a scholarship and excelled at one of the best prep schools in this country.

That said, even though you got his family's economic status wrong, growing up middle class and going to private schools does not make one less black. That's insulting, just so you know. That's what I, a proud upper middle class girl educated a private institutions, mean when I talk about the "complexities" of black life. Educate yourself. And again, show me a candidate who has a better understanding of that.

Obama's life, while interesting, was not at all as you described it. And the choices he made AFTER college, when he decided against the big bucks, and went for community work in bad neighborhoods, would indeed help him develop the understanding the poster claims he has.

Black, brown, red and yellow people have had different experiences in the USA, as groups, than white people. In many ways, the democratic party has been more responsive in recent decades to that fact. The democratic party has not been perfect, but it has been far better than the republican party. The democratic often appeals to non-white groups as voting blocks. It happened in '04 with the Lakota people in the South Dakota: they recognized the democratic party offered them a better deal that the republican party.

The fact that some non-white people are supporting black for reasons that include his being black is an example of a voting block. It's a good thing.
