Clinton the past. Obama the future.
It is really what this whole election is all about for us democrats. When you strip away all the rhetoric, the attacks, the garbage, you have before you two choices. One is a symbol of all that has been. One is a symbol of all that can be.

There is no doubt that no matter who wins the democratic nomination that things will be different than George Bush. That is also true however if we plucked someone off the street and put him in the oval office. Anyone that can drive a car can sit behind the wheel. Only one person can take us down a different road.

What the two canidates offer is two completely different realities and two completely different futures for us.

Clinton is a safe choice for many people because she is a security blanket of all that has been done before and is known. At the same time all that has been done and is known for the last 28 years at least is fighting , deadlock, and nothing accomplished. The fighting of politicians creates a void in the lives of people. It leaves them out in the cold, it leaves them apathetic towards the very politicians that are trying to do something real for them but rarely ever do. This is what Clinton embodies. The very sameness of the past. Her negatives among republicans are astronaomical. Her negatives among democrats are higher than any other canidate. If she does manage to win she will do little to acomplish what we need and we will find ourselves blaming republicans for another 4 years of reasons why nothing got done. She cannot pull republicans over to her cause.

Obama embodies what this country can be and at a very core level where this country wants to be. How much harder would it be to teach racial hatred when our president is in fact black? There would be an instant healing for many people on many levels. And for those that arent healed there will be a brain melting at the very realization that we are moving forward as a people. Obama wants to have policy discussions be live on CSPAN with participation from citizens. Has any canidate offered anything even close to this as a way to bring people back into the decision making? Obama is unique in that his vision for this country is directly related to the direction that the founding fathers wanted it to be. Calling a conference with Muslim leaders to work out issues in the middle east. Can you for one second imagine Hillary at a round table with Muslim leaders? Obama's clear understanding that "we are a nation among a community of nations", shows that we are one people on earth and that our different cultures and different beliefs are not something to fight about but something to embrace about the human race.
Obama represents a new generation of politics. There is an entire generation that has not had their voices heard since the beginning if the BUSH-CLINTON BI-NASTY.

If you strip away the rhetoric and meditate on the core of these two people, you can clearly see the difference. The only choice after this is then, do you want to evolve or do you want to wallow in the mud of the past?

I honestly do not know what will happen and a part of me fears that people may gravitate to the security blanket of Clinton simply because of FEAR itsself. Fear of what can be. I pray that we have the courage to change.

Obama will be ready in four to eight years. We need Edwards now. We need a president who will fight for America and the American people.

4. Not to throw cold water on your thoughts, but
there will be an election in 2012 also! The day after the 2008 election candidates will begin making alliances and moves to limit whoever is elected. I think we are all a little naive to think that the winner will bring us to some sort of euphoria.

6. obama is not "in fact Black" - his mom would be shocked to find this out
if you're going to base your views on racial identiy as a virtue, "black", you could at least be honest about it.

Obama is blessed to have the benefit of more than one heritage.

9. that is very true
but as i told my panamanian friend: a cop who pulls you over for no reason is not doing so because you are a panamanian of mixed ancestry. same with obama. i think a part of his appeal is that he is not a "regular" african-american, but he still couldn't get a cab in some places.
some seem convinced that his face alone will magically change a whole lot. i am not convinced.

11. You really think republicans will be "pulled over" to Obama's cause?
Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 07:03 PM by niceypoo
If Obama gets the nod from voters in the primaries, the right will explode in racism. It will be a frothing frenzy the likes of which we haven't seen since the south in the 1950s and early 1950s. Don't delude yourself that Obama is teflon because of his skin color. The right are seething bigots. All of their central issues are bigotry based. From their hatred of Gays, Muslims, disenfranchisement of black voters, hate of liberals, Clinton obsession, Mexican immigrant hatred, etc, everything is about hating one group of people or another.

I do, though, believe that Obama would mop up the republican candidate. Any of the democratic candidates would. It would be fun to watch the republicans implode in a racist frenzy, I must admit. I enjoy watching the right self destruct, its one of my hobbies.

15. I have to agree.
The Clintons have repeatedly demonstrated just how "pragmatic" they can be when it comes to making deals with the devil and selling their constituencies down the river and these last few weeks have been an unpleasant reminder. Let's move on.

16. I will vote for Hillary not out "FEAR" , as you called it,
but because I think that she'll be a great president. You may vote for Obama all you want, but I don't need a "symbol". I need someone who actually knows what she's doing and who has been around the block a few times. Obama? Let him stay in the senate a few more years until he actually has some gravitas. So far, he's all talk and little substance.
