Swampland: Illnois' Other Senator Stumps for Obama Today in Iowa
Illinois' other senator stumps for Obama

by John McCormick

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- Illinois' senior senator is out on the trail today with his junior colleague, Barack Obama, whom he introduced this morning with his trademark deadpan.

"You were expecting another Illinois senator?" Sen. Dick Durbin asked a crowd of several hundred at a stop here. "He's on his way."

Durbin, who serves as the Senate's majority whip and is a friend of Obama, recalled being at a meeting about a year ago at Chicago's Union League Club, where he said he had a "heart to heart conversation" with the younger senator and urged him to run.

"This man touches our hearts. He gives us hope," Durbin said.

When it was his turn, Obama made a point of thanking "the senior senator from Illinois."

(He also explained why he was making do without a stage on Wednesday. The truck carrying the equipment hit a deer on the way to that event."We feel bad for the deer," Obama said. "We feel bad for the truck.")

1. More vehicle drama - next, will the Clinton campaign get a flat tire or
a dead battery?

It is caucus eve and the buses and trucks, along with the deer, are taking a beating. So are the telephones, I swear by noon I had already received 10 robo-calls from both Republicans and Democrats, plus the dead-air calls which happens frequently. I think those are also a consequence of the robo-calls.

I like the soapbox.
