In Call, Clinton Concedes to Obama
By Anne E. Kornblut
DES MOINES -- Just before 10 p.m. est, Sen. Hillary Clinton called Sen. Barack Obama to concede the race in Iowa.
Earlier, as network after network called the caucuses for Obama, Clinton officials grew quiet.
They had been rapidly tamping down expectations as the returns poured in, saying that record turnout would favor their chief rival.
Clinton supporters streamed into the "victory" rally at the downtown Hotel Fort Des Moines, but they were understandably subdued. Clinton officials said they were hoping to finish in second place, insisting that all the many votes would have to be counted before they made the call.
Trying to lighten the mood, the campaign put her rally soundtrack on in the ballroom, blasting Dolly Parton's "Workin' 9 to 5," but no one danced.
