YOOHOO! Cliff Notes For those with no clue as to what BARACK 'S "Hope" means
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 07:05 PM by FrenchieCat

"For many months, we've been teased, even derided for talking about hope. But we always knew that hope is not blind optimism. It's not ignoring the enormity of the tasks ahead or the roadblocks that stand in our path.

It's not sitting on the sidelines or shirking from a fight. Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it and to work for it and to fight for it.

Hope is what I saw in the eyes of the young woman in Cedar Rapids who works the night shift after a full day of college and still can't afford health care for a sister who's ill. A young woman who still believes that this country will give her the chance to live out her dreams.

Hope is what I heard in the voice of the New Hampshire woman who told me that she hasn't been able to breathe since her nephew left for Iraq. Who still goes to bed each night praying for his safe return.

Hope is what led a band of colonists to rise up against an empire. What led the greatest of generations to free a continent and heal a nation. What led young women and young men to sit at lunch counters and brave fire hoses and march through Selma and Montgomery for freedom's cause.

Hope -- hope is what led me here today. With a father from Kenya, a mother from Kansas and a story that could only happen in the United States of America.

Hope is the bedrock of this nation. The belief that our destiny will not be written for us, but by us, by all those men and women who are not content to settle for the world as it is, who have the courage to remake the world as it should be.
- Barack Obama, January 3, 2007

A difficult concept for some to understand. Especially that last part. Tricky! :sarcasm:

5. Hope Does not Equal Faith
I believe in Hope
Faith, on the other hand, is something I do not subscribe to.

if you don't want to!

Obama doesn't mention faith....although Hillary and Edwards asked God to bless us all.

26. Dude - go out and celebrate your win
I suggest Moylan's Hopsickle Imperial Ale, but any beer above 8% will do.

Unless you don't drink, in which case I recommend anything by Ben and Jerrys.

"Hope is not a method."

You better back those hopes up with something concrete and real Senator Obama.

8. No, it isn't, that's true. But you have to have hope
in the first place to try to get anything done, and you have to give people hope in the first place before they will attempt to go along with you to get anything done. THAT is what he is doing.

14. Hope is a verb......
it is an active state of mind.....

It is what makes it hard to get up in the morning, when it is lacking.

It is what we need more of.

Without it, we cease to grow as a society.

It is an elementary concept....

It does not work singlerily.

and it can be a precious commodity.

---

Maybe that's why all those students caucused for Obama. Maybe they understood.

34. reprint of a nice New York Times reprint of the 7/07 Obama PR release - the Boston Globe and NYT are
owned by the same corp and are both pushing Obama as a way to stop Hillary.

Obama would make a good President - but later analysis of his career by the Sun Times - his local paper - pointed out the holes in the impression that chart is trying to convey.

12. Barack, you're such a hypocrite!
Hope is what I saw in the eyes of the young woman in Cedar Rapids who works the night shift after a full day of college and still can't afford health care for a sister who's ill. A young woman who still believes that this country will give her the chance to live out her dreams.

Obama is the #2 recipient of health care donations, right after Hillary. And Barack has accepted more donations from the health care industry than ANY Republican has.

So, tell us again, Mr. Obama, how are you going to fix it so that young woman in Cedar Rapids can afford health care? You're taking in millions from that very industry. Do you think they're going to allow you to interfere in their financially beneficial business plan?

Don't think so.

Hope, unfortunately, is all you've got sometimes. And you don't stand a chance with Obama, because he owes the health care industry big time. If you think otherwise, you're living a fantasy. Check the figures, do the math. How can Obama fix the health care crisis when he owes them for their donations?

15. Hope is not a strategy..
... and to call a strategy "hope" is giving a real strategy short shrift.

I don't disagree with anything in that missive, except calling that "hope".

it is a theme.

His strategy is get out the vote, and that's working out relatively well.

Wished others used it long before now!

17. "Hope" requires specific details of policies -- and the rejection of lobbyists in the White House
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 07:18 PM by brentspeak
And Obama has already ruled out NOT kicking lobbyists out of the White House. He apparently likes being wined-and-dined.

Hard to feel very "hopeful" about that.

21. Yeah well, I hope for a million dollars
but until I put some action behind that hope, I ain't getting it.

I really want to know just how he plans to get these things done.

Yes, Frenchie, it was a wonderful speech and I was moved. But wonderful speeches and well-written books aren't enough to fix the problems we face.

That you can be so easily duped by a "message".

Rethugs fall for that old-time "Elmer Gantry" like politics of a huckster preacher, who believes the Earth is only 6,000 years old, according to scripture.

With the same fervor, never looking past a THEME, you accept, wholly, a platitude not backed by substance.

I fear when people have lost critical thinking skills to fall prey to "wishin and hopin".

I see Frenchie, you have no answers when it is pointed out that your man is the benefactor of the same Corporatists that have perfected BUSHCO. Obama's hands are deep in Corporatist pockets. It is Corporatism that has undermined the American Democracy.

Good grief, every one of your posts prove the point. You might as well throw a dart at a board blindfolded, as pick a candidate based on APPEALS TO EMOTION, not backed by substance.

Tragic and SCARY!!!!!

24. I think Obama is a fakir, not truthful, just another pol and
I dont trust him. I dont think we've seen the real Obama behind that mask, and
if he gets to be president we're going to be very shocked and upset when we do see the real Obama. I haven't had a good feeling about him from the beginning and when I hear him say he doesn't take lobbyist money, which is a lie anybody can look up - I know he stinks badly. He's not a change - just more of the same in a different color.

33. Edwards. I saw and heard him in person in 2004. He's for real.
and generates a tremendous amoutn of energy in person.
I'd rather a trial lawyer who fights the hmo's and wins millions for his sick clients than a lawyer whose hand is out taking hmo lobbyist money and collaborating with the hmo's on what they would like in a health bill like Obama did in Illinois. too bad there's only 4 days for the people in New Hampshire to find all that out.
