DERRY, N.H. – Fired up on his new message, Ex-Bay State Gov. Mitt Romney put himself in the “change” league with none other than Illinois Democrat Sen. Barack Obama this morning at a town hall-style meeting in Derry’s Pinkerton Academy.
“Barack Obama got out there and Hillary Clinton said, ‘I’ve got all this experience, I’ve been there all those years.’ And yet, he trounced her,” Romney said during the forum, standing before a banner emblazoned with the slogan, “Washington is broken.”
In the critical three days before the New Hampshire Primary on Tuesday, Romney continued to brand himself as a Washington outsider, a hesitant pol pulled by circumstance into this race for President. And although his political ambitions date back at least 14 years to his 1994 senate run, Romney referred to politicians with words like “them” and “they.”
Keeping with his businessman theme, Romney stood flanked by an 11-item “to-do” list including “Make American Safer,” “End Illegal Immigration,” and “Put people ahead of selfish interest.”
“This list came from the customer, meaning the citizens I’ve met in this country,” Romney said.
And he portrayed his defeat in Iowa as a victory over household names. “It’s gonna take somebody who knows how to make change to get Washington on track,” Romney said, acknowledging that the person who wins the GOP nomination has “got to be talking about their capacity to bring change.”
Romney said Washington is like a “broken down automobile clunker,” and “we’ve been pushing that clunker into the same garage.”
Romney took several shots at Sen. John McCain of Arizona, with whom he is fighting for the top spot in the Granite State.
“We have great mavericks who are going to fight against the pork, but somehow it’s always there,” Romney said.
And despite the strange-bedfellow focus on Obama’s change message, Romney was sure to emphasize that similarities end there.
“We cannot afford Barack Obama as the next president. He’s a very nice fellow. He’s a very well-spoken fellow,” Romney said. “But he’s never done it. It’s one thing to say it; it’s another thing to do it.”
