Obama fights tears: "It's not easy"

Exhausted and facing the prospect of losing the second test of his primary campaign, Barack Obama's voice broke and he fought back tears at the close of a sedate event in a Portsmouth coffee shop.

He expressed the sheer difficulty of heading out to the trail each day -- "It's not easy," he said -- and suggested he faced "pretty difficult odds."

And with audible frustration and disbelief, he drew the contrast between his experience and Senator Hillary Clinton's that suggests that his campaign's current message -- the question of who is ready -- matches his profound sense that he alone is ready for the job.

"Some of us know what are going to do on day one, and some of us haven’t thought that through enough," she said.

The question was inoccuous:

"As a man I know it’s hard to get out of the house and get ready," asked Mario Pernold, a local freelance photographer. "Who cut your hair?"

Obama began by talking about his hair -- he has some help -- but moved to talk more generally about the campaign.

"It’s not easy, it’s not easy, and I couldn’t do it if i just didn’t passionately belive it was the right thing to do," he said.

"I have so many oppporuntities for this country. I don’t want to se us all fall back," he said, his voice breaking in the last phrase.

"This is very personal for me," he said to supportive applause from the small gathering, at which he'd been discussing policy around a table for an hour. "It’s not just political, it's not just public -- I see what's happening. We have to reverse it."

"Some people think elections are a game -- it’s about who’s up and who's down," he said. "It's about our country's future, it's about our kids' future - it's really about all of us together."

"And some of us put oursevles out there and do this against some pretty difficult odds, and we do it each one of us because we care about our country," he said.

"Some of us are right and some of us are wrong. Some of us are ready and some of us are not. Some of us know what are going to do on day one, and some of us haven’t thought that through enough," he said.

"When we look at the array of problems that we have, and the potential for it really spinning out of control -- this is one of the most important elections America's ever faced," she concluded.

The questioner, Pernold, said he'd come to the event "smitten" by Clinton, but that he's now torn. "Showing that emotion -- I really find it refreshing," he said.

5. Why would campaigning on a wave of elated sentiment make a man cry?
I find it a bit dramatic and most likely he needs some rest.

11. I forgot women and men are EXACTLY the SAME.
How can a woman expect to do a "man's job" if they aren't EXACTLY the SAME???

How dare she expect equality if she's not going to be a man!! She even wears skirts sometimes. She sure plays that "card." Imagine if Obama wore lipstick in the next debate!!

:eyes:

This is low for you, Katz.

Post 16: "The media would destroy Obama if he started crying on the campaign trail about how tough it is to run for president."

Ever heard of Pat Schroeder, Katz? This is as old as the hills, and it doesn't smell any better than it did 20 years ago.

26. It's from a RIGHT WING SOURCE
Since when do liberals take that as a legit source? Stormfront, Fox, Drudge, etc. It's ridiculous. I certainly wouldn't take ANY RW source at face value if they posted ANYTHING about a Dem candidate I'm not supporting in the primaries.

"Fake teats." You prove my point, and you have been for days.

Pshaw,

35. Media backs Hillary:? DO TELL! Cuz she's been shown to get the worst press.
There was study by an independent group that showed HIllary Clinton gets disproportionately BAD press in comparison with the other candidates.. by a HUGE margin. So you keep believing that the repub owned media is backing her.. okay? Cuz obama is the media darling right now, as is huckabee.

A man would never be asked about his hair and all that attendant crap.

And I'd feel sympathy for him if he got emotional. The same thing I feel for her.

of when Ed Muskie, one of the most honorable of politicians, was slimed by the Manchester Union-Leader's infamous "Canuck Letter," and then was savaged by the national press when he held a press conference in a snow storm.

We have real issues to deal with.

25. not sure I'm 'getting' this- but
if you are contrasting Hillary and Obama- and saying that our reaction to one or the other should vary according to gender- or that it's wrong for a candidate to be CANDIDly human then I say bullshit.

I don't know how those who run for office keep themselves together, and keep going.

One thing I AM sure of. They all have feelings and failings. They are human beings who get tired, weary, discouraged, make mistakes, and deserve our compassion regardless of what we "wish" they could 'be' or 'do' for us.

We are more alike than we want to admit.

Maybe that is why we are so unkind to each other- It's time for some changes.

Starting with ourselves first?

peace-

31. Either way, hearing wealthy folks whine is not the best way
to draw sympathy. From the angle of disappointments and setbacks in reaching your goals, I definitely understand how painful that can be. But when you look at the big picture of all the suffering that goes on in this world, all of them, even Kucinich, are damn lucky to be even considered for the highest office in the land. I like Obama and Clinton, but I'll save my pity for people who truly deserve it.
