The racial divide in the Dem party threatens to become enormous
and divisive. It's not just here on DU. It's happening in the real world. I didn't see this coming a few short months ago, and it's totally freaking me out. I've seen Obama called a racist here. How disturbing is that. I've seen the Clintons called racists, and that too is disturbing.

African Americans are THE most loyal democratic faction. If this continues along these lines, that community could become disaffected. What do you think happens if it continues for months and HRC gets the nomination? Do you realize that we can't win without African American voters?

If you don't get why not only African Americans are upset by the comments that have come from Clinton surrogates, you're out of touch.

I don't know what can be done about this, but coupled with the upcoming decision on voter I.D, we could be in trouble in a year when we should take the White House.

1. "divide"?
What divide? Who told you there's a divide?

3. Hey Cali
Every faction has its kooks. Don't judge all Clinton backers by a few who go over the line. Most Clinton supporters I know will be more than happy to support Obama if he gets the nomination. As you have seen, some of the Obama supporters have stepped over the line as well, but that is to be expected.

I expect that once we have a nominee, this place will chill a bit.

4. Believe me, I don't.
I'm really not talking about DU. I'm talking about the real world. Why do you think Rep. Clyburn is thinking of endorsing when he said he'd stay neutral?

7. I lived in one of the most racially devided cities in the country, and
I have been aware of that since the 80's-for me this is nothing new. My aunt was pregnant with her no. 12 when she went to selma and marched with Martin Luther King Jr. That was the 60's. Let's face it inequality is wrong. It doesn't matter if you are of a minority, religion, body size, age, income, it is real and it is real wrong. The bigger problem as I see it, is that this inequality is steam rolling our country. If you are in a certain party-you receive no bid contracts. If you are a crisitan-you are of the right religion. If you are hetersexual-the right orientation. There is a decisiveness purposefully driving us to distration, and causing us to fight over these areas. Fight for good jobs to stay in america, healthcare, and freedom to marry any one you want, and these problems will most likely take care of themselves.

8. I'm afraid I have to agree...
Although for different reasons. I thought as I watched the media creating the" Obama is it!' hysteria right after the Iowa vote about how crippling it is to elevate him to those standards before any real vetting had taken place. It was a fabricated pinnacle impossible to maintain and hold. I also think Clinton's win in New Hampshire, which was predicted before the media hyped her demise, would now look like a rejection of Obama on racial terms. We are constantly being played by the media in this country, not for nefarious political reasons, but for ratings and entertainment value. As soon as the votes came in,the media, instead of admitting their part in inventing the circus, blamed racism and sexism as contributing factors.Unfortunately, the ball is now rolling and will probably do great damage to what started out as a promising and positive Democratic direction with both a strong female and african american as our frontrunners. But hey,the ratings will be great!

11. very well said Cali- and even
some of the comments questioning racism are nothing more than shrouded racist attacks.

I don't know what can be done about it either. If we lose the white house because of this, it will be our own fault. I'm ashamed of us.

And afraid for us.

If we aren't ready for someone as promising as Obama- we aren't ready for anything.

peace~

12. Latino votes will supplant AA votes.
mark it down.

And blacks need to stop worrying about 'faithfulness' and start worrying about getting it together. When you're taken advantage of and for granted -- when you're told with a straight face by your own party that you're only good for casting votes, but not for seeking higher office because 'the establishment will not elect you' -- it's time to consider some things.

20. Obama has said no such thing
Maybe the Clinton Campaign should stop sending erroneous emails, Calling Obama a Fairy Tale, and having their surrogates say offensive comments. Thats what will divide the party.

25. Obama a Fairy Tale
I realize it is not in your best interests to be truthful, but what Bill Clinton said is that Obama's "I was always against the war" while supporting it with money was the fairy tale.
Of course, to admit that Clinton had a point and it was an Obama fairy tale doesn't fit with your right wing tactics.

19. You might find
this interesting -- it's a quote from Ronald Hoffman, from "An Uncivil War: The Southern Backcountry during the American Revolution" (Hoffman, Tate, & Albert; University Press of Virginia; 1985; pg xii):

"...in times of severe social stress, societies lay bare their essential structural elements. A basically cohesive community will remain reasonably united in a period of adversity while one containing divisive elements will fragment."

I posted an essay on DU:GD about this general topic. This thread reminded me of the quote from Hoffman, which I will also add to the thread on GD.

24. Look to your own.
New Obama supporters are driving the "race trumps sex" discussion, are posting the most vile sexist crap about Hillary and are driving his candidacy into a race issue.

Force Obama's campaign into a race discussion and his support evaporates in a matter of hours.

Again, look to your own posters.
