Friday DNC Press Release
Washington, DC--As all eyes turn to the Nevada caucuses tomorrow, Democrats are hoping to build on the record turnout we've seen this year for our strong field of Democratic presidential candidates. In these early contests, women have come out in high numbers to support the Democratic presidential candidates over the Republicans, following a trend we've seen in recent elections. From ending the war in Iraq to ensuring all people have access to health care to seeing that women get equal pay for equal work, women are voting for Democrats because they know women's values are Democratic values.
In the first two nominating contests of 2008, 57 percent of people who supported Democratic candidates were women. Among New Hampshire women, 62 percent who voted in a primary supported a Democratic candidate and in Iowa, nearly three-quarters of women who caucused came out for a Democrat. Single women in particular are coming out in high numbers for Democrats.
"Women are speaking with their votes, and their message is clear. They know a Democratic president will bring our country the change we need, not a third Bush term we'd get with a Republican," said Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean. "The Bush era has been disastrous for America's women, so women of all backgrounds are coming out to turn the page on failed Republican rule. A driving force in our Party, women will be pivotal to putting a Democrat in the White House come November."
"Mobilizing and empowering women has been a key priority for the Democratic Party for years," said Sharon Grosfeld, Exective Director of the DNC's Women's Leadership Forum. "Building on our successes in 2006, women are overwhelmingly supporting Democrats over Republicans as we work to nominate a candidate. Looking towards November, women will play a critical role in electing a Democratic president to put our country back on track."
