If I Were Kerry...
I would choose John Edwards as my VP , but also make clear that I have asked Wesley Clark to be my Secretary of Defense as well. Make it a three-headed Democratic monster that can campaign across the country, reach into many different factions of the voter population (military + South) where Kerry is perceived as having difficulty. Every day you could have one of the three out campaigning in different parts of the country for the ticket, and because Kerry would have already stated Clark would have a position in the cabinet, it would make the desire to see him even greater.

Kerry would of course be the president, but for campaigning purposes, the voter can always find something to like on the Dem side.

I know, I know, Kerry is not the nomineee yet. But whaddya think of that strategy should Kerry eventually win the nomination?

1. I completely agree....
One of the thing that sold bush to a lot of people I knew who were on the fence about him was the whole concept of "Well, I have my reservations about him, but I like the people he surrounds himself with". It was an approach that won over at least a dozen people that I personally knew, so I would imagine it had that effect on others as well. I think the idea of electing a "team" is appealing to people, especially as they come to realize that the president is just one guy and has a lot of people he relies on day to day.

2. Clark can't be Sec. of Def.
must be out of military at least 10 years to be eligible for that job.
He could be Sec. of State, though.

5. I would love to see a loaded ticket like this
and I shudder to say it... but Evan Bayh would guarantee Indiana. I grew up there, and they frickin' worship this guy. Me, can't stand him. But I hate Bush more.

I do think you're on to something though.

6. Fresh Faces, Too
Edwards and Clark also offer fresh faces where Kerry can more easily be pegged as an establishment guy. A Kerry/Edwards/Clark combo would be easy for people in the middle to vote for. It's an exciting team.

7. If I were Kerry...
...I would just sit back and stop campaigning because Diebold is destined to seal the deal for me.
