Wes Clark Dems $10.04 Alert: Jim Matheson (UT-2) - All Welcome!!
$10.04 Alert Today for Jim Matheson (UT-2)

If you can spare some change...

The Right Wing is taking shots at this Clark Champion:

"Noting Matheson had been among the first to endorse Wesley Clark for the Democratic nomination, Reynolds added that "he didn't blame a flight when saying he would cast his vote for Wesley Clark over President Bush — the same Wesley Clark who didn't even rule out abortion in the final month of pregnancy, who was 'uneasy' about the death penalty and supports gay marriage.

"Jim Matheson didn't mind casting any of those votes, but when it comes to his civic duty that thousands of other Utahns proudly took part in, he was nowhere to be found."

"The race for Matheson's 2nd District House seat is considered one of only a few dozen truly competitive races in the country. Democrats see retaining it as a key to their hopes of winning the majority in the closely split House. Reynolds' attack is a sign of the attention that the national parties give that race."

1. Matheson is a very conservative Democrat
He supports a Constitutional Amendment to ban gay marriage. The article says he votes with the Democratic leadership 75% of the time....which means he votes with the Republican majority 25% of the time. His father, Scott Matheson, was a two term Democratic Governor who was well liked. Believe it or not, Matheson's opponent in this years election believes he is too liberal! In Utah, anyone that is not a Republican is too liberal.

4. To put things in perspective
Unless I am mistaken (and I might be so correct me someone if I am wrong), that is a higher positive rating than John Edwards has of voting with Democratic leadership. Even if not, it is better than many Southern Dems. Figure if Matheson gets ousted, that the Republican coming in would at least reverse those percentages. The way I figure it, just fast and dirty here, any Democrat who votes with the Party over 50% in a conservative district is worth backing in a Congressional election in the vast majority of cases. We have to retake Congress and elect a Democratic Speaker of the House. That instantly changes the balance of power in all house committees, changes who gets put on conference committees to negotiate with the Senate, changes which bills get brought up for votes and which don't, changes which amendments make it to the floor, how much time is allotted to debates, which scandals get investigated, etc. etc. etc.

3. Why only incumbents?
We can't go anywhere standing still; we need to support Democratic challengers. See my website for a partial (and growing list).

13. It's not just incumbents
We have quite a few Democratic challengers represented including Stephanie Herseth (SD-AL), Jane Mitakides (OH-3) and Don Barbieri (OR-3).

I'll be happy to look into and add additional races if you have some key targets to suggest. My only criteria is that their be an established Democratic challenger -- we're not taking sides in primary races.

14. Here is one.
Try Nick Clooney (KY-4). Our current Representative, Ken Lucas(D) is retiring and Clooney is running unopposed in the primary. It would be great if we could on to this seat.
Here is a link to his website: http://www.rosemaryclooney.com/nick2004/index.htm
Everything is all on one page, so there is alot of scrolling to do so you can see everything. :hi:

5. I'm glad to see Brad Carson mentioned on the website
Oklahomans have an opportunity to fill the Don Nickles seat with a Democrat! Now, granted, Carson is a moderate to conservative Dem, but hey Nickles was a 99 percenter. ( American Conservative union rating)

10. And he's certainly better than former OKC Mayor...
Take a look at www.kirkisajerk.com. Carson's definately a better choice than former Oklahoma City mayor Kirk Humphreys... He subsidized the hell out of the new BassPro here.

Best,
Mike
