I don't think there will be much change if we win against Bush
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 08:19 AM by ringmastery
There will be some changes, but nothing substantial.

Tax reform? With republicans controlling both houses of congress, forget about it. No hope of any repeal of any of Bush's tax cuts. We'll only be able to veto more tax cuts.

Hopefully, we won't be starting any NEW wars and have better relations with Europe and the rest of the world, but we'll still be in that quagmire in Iraq. We can't leave and let that country degenerate into a civil war and another brutal dictatorship. We can't allow those 500 lives from Bush's folly to mean absolutely nothing.

We'll hopefully get to tilt the supreme court a little to the left with some more centrist judges (extremely doubtful repubs in the senate would approve a "liberal" judge). But still a hell of a lot better than Scalia or Thomas.

Health Care? Jobs? Trade agreements?

Forget about it. There will be years of gridlock until we take back congress.

1. I'm trying to be optimistic.
When the Dem wins hopefully we will pick up a few seats in congress too. When people go into the voting booth hopefully they'll pull the "all dem" lever. :-)

2. If we get a Democrat in the WH
and things start to look better (economy, Iraq, etc) then we will win back Congress.

:toast:

Plus, most important of all, we NEED a Democrat in the WH for those retiring SC Justices. If they retire under Bush, we're screwed and not for 4 years... screwed for the rest of our lives.

3. A Democratic win of the Presidency might help to elect Representatives...
... on their coattails. If there really is a backlash coming against Bush in November, it might catch the rest of the party, as well.

4. It's one step...
...not the entire answer. If people want America to be America, it will require daily efforts on the part of the majority of people in the country. If people think that a "leader" is going to make changes in their lives, they are immature in the sense of a 5-year old who believes that mommy & daddy run the universe. Political and social conciousness in America is an airplane in a backward village: some people are simply afraid of it; others hook it up to two horses to pull it like a wagon; a few people turn the engine over, and drive it like a car. But brothers and sisters, we can fly. And it has remarkably little to do with John Kerry ....although, should bush be elected, I guarantee you that things will change, and fast, in this land.

5. Things have already changed too fast. With him selected.
You are correct. If he is actually elected. We as a country are going to a bad place fast. There is no doubt in my military mind about that.

6. The only thing that will change ...
is that it will be the other half of the country that hates the President. I would rather have one half the country hating the President while he is doing the right thing, than half the country hating the President while he is not doing the right thing.

Rescinding the tax cuts for the wealthy, and executing a quick return of our soldiers will knock out the currently sky-rocketing deficits. That will be the real foundation for turning this country around.

I also think putting a corrupt administration in jail will be a big moral booster.

8. Seriously?
What happens if we don't win? We'll be living in a theocracy. Dems will be the permanent minority party.

I don't know how much better it will be than it is now if we win, but I have an idea how much worse it will get if we lose. And that scares the crap out of me. Failure is not an option this time around.

9. If BushCo is repudiated at the polls in November there will be a
lot of changes. It is not really Pollyanna-ish to point out that both Dean and Clark have engaged a simmering anger among the population that had not been given an outlet before.

When I was with the Perot faction I had a meeting with a political advisor to a well known Congressman in NYC. There were a lot of issues on the table to discuss but he cut right to the chase. All the Congressman wanted to know, the aide told me, was if we intended to run a candidate against him or not.

That is what ALL elected officials look at, bottom line, and all of the semi-quasi-psuedo-neo political philosophy they claim motivates them runs ashore on that one sticking point. Can you help them or can you hurt them?

The offspring of the two grassroots operations will start things going in short order. Already, one Clark splinter group is targeting Congressional elections on a small scale, and there is more to come as the year progresses.

Make no mistake about this, friends: the single most important matter on the minds of Congress-critters of all stripes is returning to office year after year after year. If only a handful of GOPers are hammered in November, and the grassroots movements don't disintegrate in recriminations and ego, the whole attitude in D.C. will change in a New York minute.

Most of the general population is only slightly involved with the political process. If even a small number get organised and start having an effect they swing a bat far out of proportion to their size.

Elect a Democratic President and we will turn this country around long before the 2006 Congressional elections.

10. and we should be working to do just this
if there really is a growing backlash (which there seems to be) against bush and his policies... that can (and should) be capitalized on in congressional elections.

So what do we do? Get involved (volunteer) locally (party and campaigns). Become more aware nationally and give what one can to races that can be tipped. Find other folks who feel the same and enlist them into getting involved - esp those who have NOT been involved before. Help create critical mass in fighting back for Congress.

11. Will that scary motherscratcher John Ashcroft still be the AG?
If he ain't, I consider that a marked change. Will we still have that stupid ass terra light system? Because I could do without that piece of shit too. Will a liberal or some wacko fundie be nominating our next few Supreme Court justices? Will a chimpanzee no longer have control over the Nuclear Football? And on and on.
