Bill Clinton Touts "The 1990s" In New South Carolina Radio Ad For Hillary

By Greg Sargent - January 24, 2008, 5:04PM

The Hillary campaign just announced that Bill Clinton has gone up on the air for his wife in a new positive South Carolina radio spot -- and it's hard to miss this line:

I want to thank you for twice giving me the chance to serve as president. The 1990s were a time of prosperity. We created more than 22 million new jobs, moved eight million people out of poverty, and turned our economy around.

The line seems designed to be push-back against Obama's claim that the GOP was the "party of ideas" for the last decade and a half. The Hillary camp had an ad up directly attacking Obama for the claim, but that ad came down today.

Now Bill is up on the air personally making the case for his presidential era, only this time in a positive spot. Full script after the jump.

'TRIANGULATION'

An Obama supporter and ex-presidential candidate himself, former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley said Bill Clinton is conveniently ignoring his own presidential past of "triangulation," adopting some Republican ideas in order to get re-elected in 1996.

"It was indeed in the Clinton administration ... that the whole concept of triangulation took place, which means appearing to be Republican to enough people to get elected, and that's what happened," Bradley told MSNBC.

The real reason the Republicans hated Bill as President was because he kept stealing their ideas and calling them him his own.

Im always amazed that any Democrats that are old enough to remember both of Bill's terms dont realize how they were played for fools back in the 90's.

They look back and consider Clinton's "achievements" to have been moderate by Democratic standards (or even liberal by the totally deranged), when they were actually by in large Right Wing policies long advocated by the GOP.

6. In the words of Dirk Diggler ... "HELLO! EXACTLY!"
Bill was the sweetheart of the DLC, and I've never considered him a true progressive. He was always more worried about his popularity than doing the right thing. Sometimes doing the right thing is going to be unpopular in the short term, but your legacy (something Bill seems to obsess over) will reflect a long term view of your presidency. Just look at Jimmy Carter. He's held in much higher regard today than he was 25 years ago. Conversely, I believe Clinton will be held in much lower regard, and viewed as a squandered opportunity.

From gays in the military, to welfare "reform", to mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders, to health care, Bill Clinton always sought out a politically expedient path, not what was best for the country. While the economy was doing well, the gap between rich and poor that we all view today as a great cancer upon our society was berthed, in large part, during the 1990s.

Don't get me wrong, he was certainly better than any Republican would have been. But Democrats (and America) deserve better.

With Dennis Kucinich now out of the race, I'll have to do whatever I can to support Obama (or even Edwards if he can come from behind). One thing I know for certain, given the behavior of Billary during the campaign thus far, I will NOT be supporting them. I'm not even sure if I'll get off my butt to vote for him/her in November. I detest what I'm seeing now, and I now progressives are ABOVE this nonsense.
