Really quick: Is God on America's side?
How would you answer that if you were a Democratic candidate for president and the NY Times' Elizabeth Bumiller asked you that in the last minute of a debate the Sunday before Super Tuesday?

Imagine the quote: "I don't get it, I mean I pray all the time and we's practicin' real hard an' everything, and Jesus just fucked us; it ain't fair."

Theres a great moment in near the end of "Semi-Tough" where Robert Preston takes off his cowboy hat and looks to the sky, thinking he's going to lose the game, and says: "Lord, I bin a sinner all my days...and now you're gonna fuck me." It's one of my favorite lines of dialogue ever.

(Credit where credit's due: Semi Tough was written by Walter Bernstein, Dan Jenkins (from his novel) and Ring Lardner, Jr.; see it sometime, it's hysterical.)

29. This reminded me of in WW2
a reporter asked Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis if the USA would win the war. He answered yes, because God is on our side. The reporter wrote about the USA needing to be on God's side. Small change in the wording, but a large change in meaning.

38. I believe Joe actually said
That we were on God's side. I think he meant to say that God was on our side but he slipped up and in doing so IMO said it much more accurately. I think I have heard the recording of him saying it but I'm going on memory so you may be right as well. Either way great post H20 Man its exactly what I think of when this question is asked as well.

45. Oh yeah
Although this last year has been kind of disappointing.. I'm looking forward to Casamayor vs Corrales rematch this weekend. Also I'm a big Hopkins fan so I'm pretty psyched now that Bernard will finally get another chance at a big fight/payday (Oscar fight). Its tough being a boxing fan these days with PPV prices and bad rep but I still say the sport will reward you in the end. I'm assuming you dig the fight game as well. Glad to meet another boxing fan here on DU!!

5. G-d is on the side of people who stand up for what is right
G-d is only on our side when we take moral action, action President Bush has not taken in some areas (healthcare, taxation, etc) or obviously ignored in others (Iraq, Haiti, etc)

16. God loves all his creations equally
It is the epitome of arrogance to think that God (assuming there is such a being) values an American over a Chinese, Iraqi, Russian or a cow for that matter.

While we're on the subject...this question isn't as bad as using God as justification for war or killing. My favorite trivialization of God is when God is cited as the force that allowed "the team" (substitute your favorite sport) to win.

43. Yes. We agree, right?
I think it's damaging to world peace to circulate songs like "God Bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood, and several other examples. Toby Keith's boot-in-your-Arab-ass song comes to mind, too.

While a president cannot change attitudes over night, a visionary, broad-scoped leader can lead the way toward more universal understanding.

The current president isn't in that league.

19. Well, there's a wonderful story about Abraham Lincoln...
...during the middle of the Civil War bringing in a group of leaders, and at the end of the meeting one of the leaders said, "Mr. President, can we pray, can we please join in prayer that God is on our side?" And Abraham Lincoln's response was, "I won't join you in that prayer, but I'll join you in a prayer that we're on God's side."

At least, that's how I'm answering that question from now on.

22. Bumiller was stock-full of idiotic questions
I found her performance during that debate to be utterly abhorrent, the way she kept interrupting the candidates. I particularly liked the way in which Sharpton put her in her place with regards to the media trying to determine the nominee for the voters.

BTW, I agree with the above statement on the Lincoln story. That was Edwards' answer, and a damned good one.

37. Our country is founded on the principle that God created all mankind equal
with inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. To stray from this great principle that has served us so well for over two hundred years would jeopardize ourselves, our country and our posterity, and thus would be foolhardy in my opinion, Elizabeth, and some would say, unamerican. If you ever actually encounter anyone so foolish and uninformed as to think otherwise, I suggest you take them to the Jefferson Memorial and educate them about our country's founding and history, which makes it a beacon to the whole world.
