If you saw McCain on MTP today, you know that his song and dance routine is about having being right on the surge. He claims that he stood for it when everyone said that he was wrong. It is the weapon that he is using against both Democrats and his Republican opponents. He states that him standing by the Surge, when every other person running were for Time-table withdrawals makes him the smart one, and as he calls it; that was his watershed moment, or something to that effect. He states that we should not surrender, and we shall win with him as Commander-in-chief.
It is an effective argument, to an awful lot of voters...that in effect, McCain was "right" and everyone was "wrong"...making him a leader with the correct stance (I disagree, but that's how he presents himself effectively).
And so, I believe that this is why we need Barack OBama as our Nominee (there are a lot of reasons actually, this being one big one) if McCain (or Romney) is the GOP nominee.
Barack took a stand early on the War....that it shouldn't have ever been authorized or waged. He lists how many Millions this war is costing us each day, and how this money could be used on rebuilding our infrastructure. He discusses the lost Blood and Treasure, and highlights the many veterans that have been wounded and maimed and are not being cared for properly.
So when it comes to leadership, Obama was right at the onset.
McCain supported and voted for this War, and so he was wrong.
Anything done or said afterwards is attempting to remedy a problem that McCain was involved in causing to begin with. McCain speaks of being right when it was unpopular. He doesn't yet see that Obama beat him to the punch by several years.
Obama framing Iraq (as opposed to other Dems) takes away McCain's moral certitude. Obama proves that he is the real "maverick" in this race who stood up for what was right when it was unpopular. Obama will make that argument.
Out of the Dems running, only Obama can be effective in framing that debate. He won't need to sweep under the rug the whys and the hows we got into Iraq. He doesn't have to make excuses for himself, or have to point to being sorry.
Personally that's the argument that I want to throw in the GOP's face.....because that is why Bush's approval rating are as low as they are. Iraq is the reason that no GOP candidate wants Bush campaigning for them.
Obama holds our trump card against McCain, and he will play it. :patriot:
