Film grab from President Bush's new campaign ad.

'After 3,000 people were murdered on his watch, it seems to me that that takes an awful lot of audacity. Honestly, it's in poor taste.' - Kristen Breitweiser, with her husband's ring.

The Bush reelection campaign yesterday unveiled its first three campaign commercials showcasing Ground Zero images, angering some 9/11 families who accused President Bush of exploiting the tragedy for political advantage.
"It's a slap in the face of the murders of 3,000 people," said Monica Gabrielle, whose husband died in the twin tower attacks. "It is unconscionable."

Gabrielle and several other family members said the injury was compounded by Bush's refusal to testify in open session before the 9/11 commission.

"I would be less offended if he showed a picture of himself in front of the Statue of Liberty," said Tom Roger, whose daughter was a flight attendant on doomed American Airlines Flight 11. "But to show the horror of 9/11 in the background, that's just some advertising agency's attempt to grab people by the throat."

Mindy Kleinberg said she was offended because the White House has not cooperated fully with the commission and because of the sight of remains being lifted out of Ground Zero in one of the spots.

"How heinous is that?" Kleinberg asked. "That's somebody's ."

3. I think it is a great sign that these ads have backfired
as quickly as they have. Didn't the ads just start running today? It appears the chimp is trying hard to gain the offensive and with every step in that direction, he is put more on the defensive. Karen Hughes has been on the major networks this morning in defense mode. She has been doing a terrible job too! The chimp is in big trouble.

6. Hopefully this bodes well for the convention too
Bush is already persona non grata here in New York City, so if he continues to trade on the deaths of 3000 of my fellow citizens, you can expect the convention to be, uh... interesting.

I work two blocks away from Madison Square Garden. I think I'll be taking my vacation that week, since I don't normally enjoy the feeling of tear gas and rubber bullets.

9. Fair Enough, but...
I'm thinking of going there and daring the brownshirts to teargas me. I think that would look good on ABC news.

The Army teargassed me for training purposes. It's not too bad once you know what's coming. Like a really bad cold that goes away really fast.

11. Well, good luck
I am 100% pussy when it comes to tear gas and police officers in full riot gear.

It's ironic though that your military training will come in handy when you protest a "wartime president".

16. Military Training
Yeah. That's what I'm trying to communicate to every potential protestor. The main thing you learn in the Army is that all discomfort short of death is merely temporary, and that duration is far worse than intensity. I would rather be teargassed for 15 minutes and beaten with a nightstick than stand another 24 hour guard in a tropical storm. Your body can take a lot more abuse than you think. It's the mind that need strengthening.

13. LOL! Did that day of basic ever suck
I've never had a cold where my lungs exploded out my nose.

The good news is it won't be nearly as effective in an outdoor environment.

15. Yeah, it sucked, but ony for 15 minutes.
Maybe you're more succeptible than me. They gassed me once outdoors at NTC, too. You're right, it's not nearly so bad outside.

14. true, but
remember that a lot the public has a very short memory span. If Bush is one the defensive a month before the election, then you've got him by the balls.

I am not surprised at the ads FWIW. The message, as someone has already said, is 'be glad you're alive, be afraid of not having me to protect you'. His entire presidency is predicated on that, so I think it was fairly predictable. Maybe I am just too hardened against things that should outrage.

4. Too bad he has the entire treasury at his disposal to campaign with...
the loss of money to produce these ads, if he is smart enough to pull them, won't hurt him much, if at all.
Shameless whores, all of them.

5. Anytime a campaign has to defend its own ads
they are in big trouble already. I hope the Repubs keep running these ads and keep defending them. The whole thing illustrates exactly what Bush is really all about* for those who don't seem to have grasped it yet.

* What Bush is really all about: Making money for himself and his friends.

10. Roger that.
I'm actually looking forward to their "Willie Horton" surprise. They have demonstrated such ineptness lately that it is sure to be a disaster in direct proportion to it's meanness.

They keep shooting themselves in the foot. I say give them a bigger gun.

When the Bushies finally realize this is backfiring on them, they will be scared, really scared. they have nothing left to run on.
