3. This is something that just might go down.
Kerry has already indicated he is inclined away from the South. Florida may be impossible, no matter what. The rest of the South is too risky. I leave it to Kerry, but if the unions insist, well, you know...they could make this case, and it has some merit.

But Dick is boring. Dick is the past. Can we do it with someone else? Dammit, Wes Clark would help more in Ohio and WV than Dick!

Senators and other politicians are a dime a dozen, but this is a four star General and we are at War (they say)! Wes Clark has more adrenalin than the entire Bush Administration. He needs calmed down a little, is all. Remember, this is all new to him. 1st in his class at the Point? You know how quick a study that makes him!? Plenty quick. Wes Clark is probably running laps around his county right now, to unwind, or speed-reading the complete works of Voltaire before he goes to sleep, tonight.

Dick makes me yawn.
Dick is in bed asleep right now, I'll bet.
Sleep, Dick, sleep.

4. Gephardt doesn't add enough
It may just be me, but I think Gebhardt is too subdued. I'd like to see someone with some animation who will take no prisoners. Kerry can stay above the fray while his VP selection rips BushCo to shreds.

On the other hand, if Gebhardt could insure a win in Ohio and Missouri, I'd jump on the bandwagon. With those two states, we'd actually have a better than even chance of winning the election.

5. Gep Could NOT Ensure A Win Anywhere.
Sorry, but Iowa proved that.

Not that ANY VP candidate can ENSURE a win.

6. Gep already PROVED to the World that he is INEFFECTIVE.
The House Dems in steady chaotic decline under his leadership.

Besides, the picture of Gep, Liberman, and * in the Rose Garden cheering the Invasion has soured me on Gep forever. Choosing Gep for VP slot would be a crippling blow to the Dems chances in '04. The only one WORSE than Gep would be Liberman.

7. Don't depend on organised labor to win this election.
Ask Gephardt and Dean what their union support got them.

There are still bright spots, like 1199 in NYC and some other locals in other locales but the days when a respected Union Leader could call upon the rank-and-file to come out for a candidate are gone, gone, gone.

There was a very good unauthorised biography of Lewis that ended with a description of one of his successors walking from the union H.Q. to his chauffered limo, wearing his Brooks Brothers suit. The point the writer was making was clear, and this was back in the forties.

11. An absolutely catastrophic choice.
I truly hope that Kerry will be wise enough not to make it.

12. As a Missourian,
I have to say that Gephardt would NOT even guarantee Missouri.

He has no following outside of St. Louis. He isn't even that well regarded here partially due to the many years he practically wasted as an ineffectual Minority Leader, ignoring the concerns of his district. If the Missouri Legislature hadn't redistricted, he would have been vulnerable in 2002, had the Repubs come up with a decent candidate.

13. Please, not Gephardt!
Can't we look for inspiration, some excitement, or even some idealism?

I don't know that we can guarantee X candidate can win X state. So why don't we go with someone:

1.Qualified
2.Someone who will attack the Repubs in a way Kerry won't
3.Someone to generate some excitement, rather than yawns

14. I saw Dick Gephardt last Saturday before Super Tuesday in Ohio
He was really, really terrific. I had never seen him with such passion. Nonetheless, I have to disagree that he would be the best choice for VP. Kerry will not choose someone with legislative only experience (it would be a huge mistake), and Gep is no guarantee for Ohio or WV or even Missouri, no matter how much he is loved by the unions (and they do love him).

Gephardt is a fantastic legislator, and would be awesome, maybe the best ever, Secy of Labor. I like him bunches. But the sun has set on his chances to be Pres or VP.

As another person said on a cable news channel, what is wonderful about Gep is that he will do whatever he is asked. "Fetch Dick Cheney's face" and he will do it. He doesn't make verbal gaffs. He is a terrific at debate. But he doesn't have fire, and he is sorely lacking the "it" factor.

I don't think he will be VP, but I sure hope he is somewhere in the Kerry administration--he is oh so valuable an asset, and Kerry would be a fool not to include him in there somewhere.

16. Gephardt does nothing for me
Kerry already has the backing of unions. He HAS to get a running mate from the south. I like Edwards now because I think his two Americans theme will win hearts in FL, LA, and ARK.
