Proof that Obama will say anything to get elected
Apparently Obama is not the straight shooter he appears to be.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/chi-chapman-0303-column,0,1428186.column

On Thursday, The Washington Times reported that in 2004, as a candidate for the U.S. Senate, Obama came out for decriminalizing marijuana use.

....But in a show of hands at a debate last fall, he indicated that he opposed the idea.

When confronted on the issue by the Times, however, the senator defended his original ground. His campaign said he has "always" supported decriminalization.

...Recently, he had told a New Hampshire newspaper, "I'm not in favor of decriminalization."

4. Come off what?
Just relaying facts.

You don't have a problem with someone that just says what people want to hear?

3. Plus he voted for Kyl-Lieberman just to seem tough on defense.
Oh, wait...he did not do that. Hmmm...I know somebody did. Who the hell was that. Great, now I'll be up all night trying to remember which Democrat tried to expand GWBs war-making powers.

25. He didn't vote on it. Hillary voted in support of the K/L amendment.
(which labeled Iran's Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization, potentially opening the door for Bush to use Hillary's Iraq "use of force" resolution to expand fighting into Iran)

10. no remember, he was the one who pretended he could not vote to avoid a decision
on the issue until the dust settled, and then he can make any choice that he wants. That is the beauty of Obama. No vote, but great at MOnday morning quarterbacking.

12. more right wing bullshit.
do you even know who steve chapman is? talk about people who will say anything. this is the second time today i have seen bottom dwelling wingnut attacks against obama posted as though they were holy writ.
believe it or not, we have plenty of freepers in suits here in chicago. mostly, they write for the tribune. so, here is a clue- if it appears on the trib op-ed page, chances are it is a LIE!
but then, what would hillbots know about picking friends.

18. i don't see steve chapman doing so.
just splitting hairs about obama's plans. but steve's the kind of libertarian that thom hartmann often refers to- a republican that wants to smoke dope and get laid. while at the same time licking bush's balls, and blowing up family planning clinics.
actaully it's the left wing that wants it decriminalized. mayor daley has quietly ordered the police to not was time and resources on small weed. most of the rest of the sane dems here feel the same way. i would assume barck would.

19. Sure sounds like it to me
From the same article......

One alternative to that approach is decriminalization, which is not exactly radical or untried. It's already the norm in 12 states—not just California and New York, but places like Mississippi, Ohio and Nebraska. About one of every three Americans lives in a state or city where pot users typically don't go to jail.

Despite this lenient approach, Omaha and Cincinnati still would never be mistaken for Jamaica. One thing we know is that criminal penalties have little if any effect on the number of stoners. States that have decriminalized cannabis are largely indistinguishable from states that have not.

A 1999 report by the National Academy of Sciences found "little evidence that decriminalization of marijuana use necessarily leads to a substantial increase in marijuana use." Harvard economist Jeffrey Miron surveyed the available data from here and abroad and agreed: "Existing evidence provides no indication that marijuana decriminalization causes increased marijuana use."

24. Seems to me like there are a lot of posters here that are doing nothing more than trying to drive
wedges between Obama and Clinton supporters. Not talking about issues but about hand shakes etc. This is exactly what Karl Rove would love.

31. I hope it works.
Heck, saying anything to get elected is Repuke strategy #1, and it works wonders for them. Ronald Raygun said he could cut taxes and balance the federal budget at the same time. It was a lie then, and it's a lie now, but lots of Repukes get elected for saying it.

Hope it works for us this time.
