I think at heart, the southwestern states are truly a moderate to progressive area. With the exception of Utah that is. We should not entirely write off the south but the Democrats have a chance to take away the southwest. New Mexico is in our column. Arizona went to a Democratic president for the first time in over 50 years back in 1996, to Clinton. Nevada is a swing state that has gone Democrat both times under Clinton. Colorado went to Clinton the first time. And while we have a shitty governor and some stupid congress people, things can start shifting back to the left. I don't think Owens is that popular as he was back in 2002. Many feel that Tancredo is an embarassment, even Republicans don't like him. Bob Beuprez was barely elected over his opponenet and McInnis' district could be turned dem. We could make a serious play for Campbell's senate seat as well. I run into a lot of people who can't stand Shrub.
The southern strategy that was suggested about cherry picking southern states is a good idea as well.
