Thoughts after seeing Hillary's “staged” event and Obama's rally

Disclaimer--I am still in observation mode - so that I can maintain as much objectivity as possible, as I analyze this country's possible futures. This will be my honest take on the Clinton live satellite forum and Barack's Rally in Boston. Not a play by play, nor in depth - but a general takeaway after viewing both events and rereading some positions of each.
If you have read their respective policy papers, you might have realized that there is SO MUCH that is very similar, or with slight differences, or different angle of approach. BOTH of them are discussing so many issues that we progressives have been pushing for many years - health care, environmental and energy production interrelationship with jobs and economy are spoken of in ways that would make FDR's ears perk up, if not dance. We are riding the change train, and as silly as that may sound, you can't have a movement without big themes and broad strokes for people to rally around. A long list of “things to do” are necessary, but not enervating to the footsoldiers that will win it. To win, one must inspire. Did either of these events succeed?

I can easily hear the detractors faux complaints:
“It was staged! Mischief!”
Of COURSE it is staged - try producing a country wide sat show without a hitch. If is wasn't “staged“ it would be sheer chaos. That's just the reality of production, baby. My only complaint is that the website has no player controls, the user can't pause or rewind to check a good part, etc. Bad interface choice. Maybe they will fix that.

“I bet they were planted questions! Mischief!”
Were the people plants or too friendly an audience? That is SO not the point - the question is “Were the questions good?“ I would say yes - compare to any of the “debates“ - they were often specific to the different areas' needs, including drought and other specific energy questions. The last “superfriendly“ debate was brought to us by “clean coal“ and had not ONE energy/environment question.
Bonus points:
No pundit gotchya bullshit questions.
What a relief.

I could go through the thing, but this post will already be too long. Just watch with open mind, and enjoy.
If you are a supporter, you should be proud. If not, it should be a comfort that if she is the nom, this shows that she can be strong and personable. She CAN put out a case for the future in ways that McCain can not.

Pleasant surprise question one wouldn't hear from Timmeh:
What will you do about outsourcing and no-bid contracts for govt projects , esp like Katrina and Iraq.
Sen. Clinton called Blackwater “the tip of a very dirty iceberg“ - a great quote.
Sounds like she could be serious about dealing with that christofascist outfit, but boy, does THAT need to be done carefully.
She got to talk about outsourcing of govt contracts, and the questioner emphasized iraq cronyism, so she hit that real quick.
I love it when these accountability issues pop up. So much better than the “snub” or “crying” etc etc

Her comments on jobs, energy conservation and production were quite solid, and showed knowledge of detail about available technologies. I half expected her to mention straw bale or composting. Victory gardens. She like she was just brimming full of ideas ready for deployment.
As a sidenote, on Saturday, IIRC, Bill was talking about adapting a sod roof and solar panels to the church in which he was speaking, paid for by low interest govt loans paid by the savings themselves. Even DLC center left is now talking like a green. Ain't that cute as hell? Set aside the fact that Clinton/Gore should have done this, the dems are FINALLY ready to take on that whole 20th century thing.
Gore woulda, Kerry woulda, and now either Hillary or Barack WILLA.

High speed rail. Contrast to GOP who want to abandon rail.
So many things - makes the pugs look like the dinosaurs they are.
So Hillary did great. The crowds were enthused and real, and asked real questions. The answers were thorough and detailed, within the confines of the format.
We all win on this. The more the world sees two candidates talking up hope and change and innovation, the better for dems, the party of ideas for the 21st century, and the better for us all. America is back.

It is apparent that this format is where Hillary shines. One of her main challenges is the years of demonization, and when America sees that seh not only DOESN'T have horns, she is so quick minded and sharp, funny and often spontaneous (yes, detractors, it happens)--If she is the nominee, we need to get her in this format against McCain. She would FLOOR him. Of this I have NO doubt.

Barack Obama's rally, a format in which HE is most comfortable, was also inspiring and informative - to the degree you can BE informative in that format. These two formats cannot be compared directly, as they each have different criteria for success. As others have stated here, I would LOVE to see Obama in a similar format, and I think he could do quite well. I also think he needs to start sprinkling in more informative explanations and more thoughtful venues. I have seen some, and he is good at it. People need to see more of that.
His background as an organizer, professor, orator and constitutional lawyer are apparent, and serve us well. He understands the issues, and has amazing ideas for opening up got to the people. Rather than telling you in detail a list of things he will do, and hand them down from above,he shares his principles and direction, and asks us to help push for bold action from the bottom up. This method is organic democracy in action, and that inspiration in his supporters are not cultlike “give me power and I will do this” but a deeper democratic “together we can work out the details and succeed together” - he is bringing people back into the loop. That is empowerment.

Hillary's event showed her brains and heart and humor - it was primarily informative and, if you GOT it, inspirational.
Barack's event showed his brains and heart and humor- it was primarily inspirational and, if you GOT it, informative.

See, there is no need for a supporter of one candidate to dismiss and insult every little thing that other candidates do.
It makes you look small.
It MAKES you small.
Don't play it small, people.
What you will miss by playing such games is too important. Our future is too important.
BOTH candidates said the same thing and showed it - when they are addressing real issues and not attacking in dirty ways. I don't care if they jab a bit and differ, but the real issue before us is clear. They both know that, and both have still failed at times. so have so many here on DU. It is time to move beyond that. Time for grownups, some would say.

It is a shame that folks here are so tied up in tearing each other down that they cannot see that clearly. And the real tragedy is, that being too tied up in either side, to the point of being able to see the bold and historical change of era and not jusrt pick a side, but truly savor the long unrealized potential of a real democratic restoration.

Folks, you know we were ROBBED of that change the world was ready for in 2000, and again in 2004 - lived through the fearmongering and homeland color codes and voter caging, Diebold, Brooks Brothers riots, on and on... Let us not wallow in recrimination, nor tear each other apart in the ruins of this poor country after the assault and rape by the neocons. Do not scoff at our fellow democrats, be they old vets in the struggle who have SO much to teach, or the fresh new faces who were as young as 10 years old - 10 years old! - when the Bush regime grabbed power. They are now adults, ready to be embraced as equals in this fight, and bring in new ideas and skills in addition to their own special points of view. And everyone between - we need every vote, and to act rudely or drive away someone who is your potential ally is not just petty, it is stupid - beyond stupid, it deadens the soul.

We should cherish this chance, and respect our brothers and sisters and all our candidates.
They, and we, are making history. It's our time now.

There will be muck aplenty in the general, and as we drag these regressive republicans, as mean and fearful as they are, into a better future for ALL of us.
If your skills are only to TEAR DOWN, then go to the rightwingers' sites and give them bloody hell!
IN that role, your snark and pettiness can shine, and you will wear them down and waste their time.
Dilute THEIR resources, not those of your fellow dems.
Here on DU, we should be strategizing and changing minds, honing arguments and predicting attacks; calling out bad media and creating our own, debunking false propaganda and digging out their dirtiest secrets. We should e building alliances and sharing information, rising to a higher level of organization using the new social media tools and methods to make our voices heard.

However this works out, don't tell your grandkids you spent so much time snarking at a fellow dem.
I, for one, plan to be as clear headed and open hearted as I can be.
I know I am not the only one. We talk behind your back.
Please join us in taking the HIGH ROAD into history.

At any rate, welcome, and good to be on the same side, relative to the "Bomb, bomb Iran" of McCain.

We will be the party of ideas for the 21st century, and your post is a good example!
Aaauugh! Snakse and Zombie Mutants! You will have the fearmongers shaking.

Or maybe just operating at a different level.

Obama's music is like his own professed idols - Miles Davis, Coltrane, Bach - some people don't get them either. Some think Bach imparts no meaning. Imagine that!

Some can be inspired and informed simultaneously.
It's a gift.

63. i have tried to engage in conversation with you in good faith, sorry you see it as futile.
Hey, if some "Obamaites" ignored your posts of substance, I am sorry.
It seems to have made you bitter, so now you hop into well meaning thread with oneliners like "stupid poll" or such, just to do what? When I tried to give you examples of how ALL the candidates, including Edwards, had some plans for open govt, it was to set a safe common ground to discuss the principles of govt transparency. Because it applies to ALL candidates, I thought it would be a safe and fruitful topic. I was wrong, though I had some nice and polite back and forth with the initial poster of that thread, even though we disagreed on some, agreed on some.

I was trying to engage you in discussion - you said you weren't here on DU for discussion, and that you wouldn't want to meet me, and that I had anger issues. I am sorry if it touched a nerve - I didn't know your past.

Now you say it was the 'Obamaites' who made you so angry, and say I bore you, after adding nothing to my thread but vitriol.
But please consider just this one thing - the main point of this long OP was that the rancor of these primary battles on DU were hurting our ability to listen to each other, and to communicate with each other.

It would seem that you are a victim of that very rancor, and so in a way you are example A.
I also had no intention to make you hate me, or bore you or whatever - and I am no "ite" or "bot" for anyone, so your issues have now affected not only your enemies, but a neutral longtime DUer who was trying to make this place better.

I see great value in DU and discussion with fellow progressives. In your time here since last November, you may have made many friends here - it is DU's loss that because people were mean to you, or ignored you, you decided to stop your substantive posts.

My position is that we need more substantive posts, so please reconsider, perhaps outside of the GDP battlezone.

I have ZERO enemies here, though I have been called names even for posts trying to be fair to multiple candidates. I know how it feels to be attacked for no good reason whatsoever. Being ignored is the least of it. Short little snarky posts do NOT add to comity, in my opinion.

Even though I have been here since 2001, I have NO idea how to tell who is ignoring my posts as a group - but I have also seen a lot of attack posters who have ignored pleas for civility. I think it indicates that the attackers have NO desire to have a discussion, just their little battles.

I find it sad, and hope you and I can get along in the future.
Peace to you, and all DUers - we may disagree, but we are all human, and all want better than the Bush regime.

I hate the demonization of candidates. Yes, I've occasionally criticized Obama, but I don't think he's Satan. Although I don't prefer him he'd be miles better than what we have now. 37. Nastyriffraff, I agree that he needs to show more of that.
He is starting to add more detail into the speeches, but there isn't much he could tinker with and still keep that flow.
What he needs is a format like the one Hillary did. Hell, under sane public financing we would have long town hall sessions without buying time on Hallmark. That should have happened before Iowa, on public tv so millions could see it for free.

And then edited into a database and put up on the web so that people could check it out sorted by subject, viewed linearly, whatever.

I am tired of waiting for that damn 21st century.
These are solved problems, just waiting to be implemented.
Obama has very detailed ideas with regard to open records, net freedom, intellectual property rights (see Lessig) as well as net access for all, net privacy, and more. but you don't get that in a rally speech.
If he tried, alas, he would be deemed boring just like Kerry or wonky just like Gore -- these are the traps, as you know.

Very well said. I thought Hillary was great last night, at the town hall and on Letterman. She is sharp and informed. I was made proud of her abilities. When either candidate is allowed to be themselves, without the shit spewing debate moderators, they look good.

Obama called his news conference the other day to show that he does have concrete plans and understandings. He answered questions with poise, confidence and abitlity.

They stand in contrast to the pukes. Both are great. Both are likable. And either will make a great President.

46. tekisui, you can say in 50 words what it takes me a thousand.
A respectful bow to you for that.

It takes a special insight, apparently, to see the good in both of them.
One theory would be a form of "hysterical blindness" but I might get accused of being sexist for that term. I would prefer "WILLFUL blindness" - but I agree with others here that, just as Hillary takes steps to "show her softer, smart, funny, mom, etc" sides, Obama needs to show more "wonk, explain it in simple ways, etc"

We should feel free to praise and critique fairly, and press them both to hone their skills.

In the end though, the critique of us as DUers, and as citizens, is to get with the REAL program and not be all hatin' on each other.
Democratic unity and maturity makes baby freepers cry.

64. What a great analogy -- Bach vs Miles
Your OP was like a drink in the desert. Thanks for the cogent analysis. I've also enjoyed watching your deft handling of the tone deaf here on this thread. K&R

44. Definitely check out the whole thing at link below. You should also listen more closely to Obama
This reminds me of when a friend didn't understand my music choices "too repetitive and boring" - until I explained a bit of history, and then suggested repeated listening within the genre. To his credit, he did, and eventually had an epiphany. Afterwards, the mindbending and floaty effects of minimalism became totally apparent. (Reich, glass, Riley, etc)

The thing is, a rally speech does not have high expository information built into the form. A townhall forum does. A speech by MLK does not have policy info, and yet the inspiration calls people to greatness. There was not a long list of to-dos in the gettysberg address, or JFK's Inauguration speech.

In other words, a Rally speech's very purpose is to fire the folks up, to motivate them to accomplish goals that were imparted through other means, traditionally position paers, books, prior fora, etc. The modern variant is of course the internet. If you know what it is that He plans to do, and the parts where he INVITES US to reason together and give suggestions as to priorities, you would then know what "CHANGE" means.

Stop spying on us, close Guantanamo, build green collar jobs, put people to work in long range projects that get us off the junk.
It is a long list. It is out there - and a good deal is not that far from hillary or Edwards, in the big piture view of things.
I too was frustrated by the "ookay, change what, exactly?", because I LOVE me some good detail. i am a damn geek.
One reason why I love Gore and Kerry. They could do that well. But inspire? Well, they inspired me, like B and H can BOTH inspire me. I guess I am easily inspired.
So, I looked more closely, read his stuff, some comparatives, saw Cornell West on c-span explain a few things. That got me to thinking of the "prophetic strain" of American politics, of Frederic Douglass, of Coltrane and Davis, and RFK. Then, it just all came together. I saw the trail of broken promises going back to John and bobby and Martin and Malcom. I saw how the DLC was formed to reclaim a middle lost after the civil rights act enabled the southern strategy that let Reagan/Poppy come to power, just 4 years after being forced out under Nixon. How they created a strain of democrat that negated the lost dreams and became a major controlling power throught the 90s. And now this new upstart brings back that prophetic strain, that change can be deep and structural, not just a clever triangulation of current paradigms.

That, to me, is the broad shape of this battle for the soul of the Democratic Party.

If you listen to what he says before "Yes we can" you would see that he describes what the naysayers are saying can't be done.
"Si se puerde" "Yes, we can!" is a defiant fuck you to the lobbyists and other powers that be that the people are back in the process.

Of course, that does not necessarily make DLC "evil"- nor does it make the ability to dream big again, and get people to really stand up and get back into the process, just a Britney song. Heck, I didn't even know Britney was a Constitutional scholar as well! :)

Anyway, think about these things.

53. I just read your post Bongo Prophet ... you're a cool cat.
I'm looking at both candidates. In the end, I'll support either nominee in the GE because I can not bear to have another Republican administration in power. :hi:

48. Gracias, BHP. That two headed thing in your sig must be defeated.
What they say -
The people, united, will never be defeated.

The neocon virus wants to pass to a new host.
I want either of these Dems to be strong enough to win.

Who would want less?
What motives would they have for wanting to tear us down by infighting?
Who is the historical winner when votes are suppressed?

We know.

Intelligence AND compassion.

27. we should be "debunking false propaganda"
What about propaganda from the DLC that Clinton will do something for the working class?
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/hfojvt

"Snarking at a fellow dem". Then what am I supposed to do when the supposed fellow dem keeps talking like a Republican - fiscal responsibility, tax credits, promoting the Bush stimulus package instead of fighting to improve it? Just cheer her on? Go Hillary! Promote those Republican talking points! Taxes ARE too high. Yeah! Especially for those "struggling" people in the $70-120,000 range. Yeah! And the Bush stimulus package is gonna help the unemployed. The checks sent to rich people will trickle down to the unemployed and cold and hungry. Yeah! There's no need to increase funding for LIHEAP or food stamps or unemployment insurance.

That's what she said in her speech. I am supposed to applaud? I am supposed to hope she gets a chance to spew the same BS in a SOTU? Our time had come when Jesse Jackson was our point man. We lost too much ground under Bill Clinton. I don't wanna be thrown off that bridge to the 21st century again. I don't want another Presidential election where I have a choice between a socially liberal moderate Republican and a socially conservative far-right Republican.

57. Sometimes your methods are quite unique, rodeodance
I remember one post where I was irritated at the stupidity of a thread, and you were buzzing around one of your "enemies" with multiple short posts. I laughed in spite of myself, you were like a tse tse fly on an elephant.

That is when I said to myself, "s/he should go mess with the freeps, she so craaaazy. to valuable to be buggin' on a fellow dem."

It was sort of a "the force is strong in this one" -- and that whiile I was disagreeing with your tactics on principle. :)

54. i think legit critique is far different than snark or poo flinging
I saw good and bad in each candidate.
I saw DUers being WILLFULLY blind to the "other" candidates ERVERY move - and here is the important part - EVEN when the policy was practically indistinguishable. there was not anything remotely resembling communication, and they are stuck in a downward spiral of stupid.

Now you, in contrast, are having extreme disagreement, but they are real legitimate policy concerns.
You are not acting irrationally and fighting in a tit for tat or pointless way.
The correct response to a strong disagreement with a policy is strong advocacy of counter-policies or a different candidate that supports your vision, etc. Many time I have not had a viable candidate that will do all of what I want, or even a large part. I understand.

If you got the idea out of my post that I thought you should just applaud mindlessly and be happy with either or both, well...maybe I am a bad communicator. I will grant you that possibility, rather than call you some bad name - and THAT is more the point. Expressing legit concerns is good. Mindless side arguments are pointless, and tkae time away from the real stuff, the important life or death stuff.

I think you are on the legit side, for sure. From our long discussion on class matters last fall, I think we agree on a lot of things, and where not, we disagreed amicably.

55. I just don't see how democracy can work without communication.
Edited on Tue Feb-05-08 06:14 PM by Bongo Prophet
Here is a concise summary in honor of Jenmito, the best LTTE writer I have ever seen:

When the shrieking gets too loud to hear each other, democratic processes screech to a halt.

Or in a brief axiom:

If one cares to SEE one must honestly LOOK.

If you like the message, spread it - especially with the bad actors in your own camp.
We get a few on each side doing this, and we might be able to hear each other.

now THAT is the TO DO item that matters.
(Besides voting, of course!)
