Breaking: Hillary Campaign Goes To War With MSNBC Over Chelsea 'Pimp' Comment
By Greg Sargent - February 8, 2008, 1:19PM - TPM Election Central

This is really something. The Hillary campaign has just gone to war with MSNBC, dispatching a top Hillary adviser to launch a lacerating attack on the network on a conference call with reporters moments ago.

On the call, top Hillary adviser Howard Wolfson suggested that there's a "pattern" of reprehensible comments by MSNBC personalities, and said outright that the Hillary campaign could no longer "envision a scenario where we would debate on that network given the comments that were made and have been made."

Wolfson made the comments in response to a question about a now-notorious comment by MSNBC's David Shustser, in which he asked if Chelsea's campaigning on her mom's behalf meant she was being "pimped" by the Hillary campaign.

This shit is totally beyond the pale. Good for Clinton, going after the media for attacking Chelsea like this.

1. They're great media watchdogs when their own oxe is gored...
The problem is they generally stand silent on the media and all of the issues related to it.

Where were they when Phil Donahue got axed for being too anti-war?

6. Respectfully
If you said I was pimping out my daughter , mom, or sister I would drop you and if I said that you were pimping out your wife, daugher, or sister I would expect you to drop me...

That shit is beyond the pale...

26. I agree it's beyond the pale and she was right to speak out
My point was that so many things have been beyond the pale regarding the media, and the Clintons have eitehr been on the sidelines or schmoozing with the media barons and helping to create this climate.

If only they had been equally forceful in pushing for more balance and less slander during the days of the Iraq War Debate.

They helped to create a situation, and only get upset when it bites them in the butt.

...so, I don't understand your assertion:
'They helped to create a situation, and only get upset when it bites them in the butt'
? ? ?

If an official doesn't make their comments public, they might as well not exist as far as I'm concerned. If they want me to think something they should come out with it.

30. Um they were in the White House during much of it
Bill Clinton presided over the assembling of these monsters, and he presided over removing any requirement that the media serve the public responsibly.

And I wish Hillary had orchestrated a campaign to quash the biased cheerleading for Bush and slander against war critics during the Iraq War debate.

Edited on Fri Feb-08-08 02:33 PM by CatnHat
are nothing more than what the Limbaugh's and Hannity's of the world are; dirty and petty. I swear some of the Obama "crowd" are republican trolls. Hope and Change, Indeed.

If the media went after Obama's kid, then maybe you just might "feel" the "injustice". But again, trying to debate anyone in the Obama camp, it is next to impossible; it's reminiscent of when the Bush crowd went after Bill Clinton, and you have the nerve to call yourselves democrats and running on hope and change. Hypocrites.

5. I'm glad. They, including our beloved KO have been over the
top. The only exception has been Dan Abrams, who has on a couple of occasions that I watched, demanded some fairness for Hillary. Yes, even Keith Olbermann can be criticized.

Speaking of fairness, where was the Obama biography on MSNBC? Maybe tonight?

Might be because there was simply no time. Don't think it was done as an affront to Obama.

16. No, I agree totally. Those ARE old because I've seen them before. I'm
guessing they just don't have one done on Obama :-) Still, in the interest of fair play, its not exactly fair to run two one-hour bios on McCain and Hillary and not given Obama an hour of free time.

It may be problematic that they can't find enough to fill an hour. An editor knows it will put the audience to sleep after the hope and inspiration angle is used 40 times.

23. Exactly, he was barely on anyone's radar a few short years ago.
He has gone from the total obscurity of a state senator to a presidential candidate. This is some scary stuff. I want to know who's pulling the strings.

I believe a yikes is in order, not a complaint about not showing a biography.

Let me guess, the Hillary biog showcases the Lewinsky scandal.

7. What is any of this going to change, except that Shuster will apologize and for the next
month or so, no one will dare report anything critical of Hillary and reportage will be even MORE lopsided than it is now.

Don't get me wrong, it NEEDS to be addressed and FIXED. But the system we have now is not working !

Exhibit A: Media fucks up. Media gets blasted. Media apologizes.
Exhibit B: Two weeks later media is back to the SOS.

My solution: GET RID OF Shuster, Tweety, Tucker, Morning HO and ALL those partisan hacks. Return to Journalism, NOT punditry.

Can we lobby for THAT?? An apology is not what we need. An overhaul is what we need.

is genuine in his direction and passion. However, he only gets to express his own opinion and only gets to select a certain per cent of what he covers. He gets to do it because he makes money for MSNBC/GE - from all people who turn in to watch him. I don't listen to the those programs any more - I've watched for 17 years straight and I know everything they are going to say and I can follow the subtleties. Been there. Done that. Don't need it anymore. I do, however, stop and watch the clips posted on youtube when enough DUers talk about it.

I like Keith - I don't know how you jumped to your conclusion. However, I usually say he is an exception, because he leads and he believes in himself and expresses himself to the degree MSNBC allows it.

28. The Main Stream Media got infected by the trash talk of Right Wing Hate Radio
They spout outrageous garbage all of the time as if they were just reporting poll numbers. Hillary Clinton is more often the victim of this than most Democrats, but Democrats as a whole suffer much more than Republicans from this media assault that unfairly targets our PArty a disproportionate amount of the time.

The thing is Hillary Clinton found the perfect point to draw the line here that virtually any of America's hundreds of millions of parents can understand like they would a punch to their gut; talk of Chelsea being pimped. This is the ideal repulsive example to throw in the media's shit talking face. This time the shit will blow back and stick exactly where it belongs.

It is possible her fighting stance over this will help Hillary Clinton in the short term (though maybe not - the media just may have one more axe to grind against her because of her calling them out like this) but in the long term it will help all Democrats, and all citizens who are tired of shock jock talk passing as political commentary in America.

I know how sincerely protective both Bill and Hillary Clinton have been of Chelsea, fearing that she would become the subject of this type of vile public attention because of her parents careers. I think Hillary's anger about this is genuine, well founded, and very well placed.

Could you imagine Eric Severeid, Howard K smith, Edward R. Murrow, Harry Reasoner, Robert Trout, Walter Cronkite say the President's Daughter is being "Pimped Out"? If this were 125 years ago Bill Clinton would be challenging Schuster to a duel.
