Maintaining the status quo
Mods, this is pretty clearly choice-of-candidate-related, even though not specific to an individual

1. Good cartoon, Mairead.
Democrats always seem to be stepping sideways - sometimes the glaciers are too big to sidestep.

3. Does anyone not understand that this is an anti-Bush cartoon?
Mocking him for ignoring the scientific consensus on global warming?

4. I think it's more general than anti-Bush, honestly
I read it as being anti-self-serving-'ignorance'. You know, the people who, when you say something they don't want to hear, call you names.

5. You'll have to be more specific
Edited on Tue Mar-09-04 02:02 PM by Feanorcurufinwe
I've said clearly and specifically what I believe the cartoon is about, and it doesn't require any leaps of imagination to understand my interpretation.

"You know, the people who, when you say something they don't want to hear, call you names."

No, I don't 'know' which people you are referring to. Who are you referring to, and on what instance did the exhibit the behavior you are accusing them of? And what in the cartoon leads you to believe it is comdemning people for 'namecalling'?

14. Jesus, Feanor, what's the matter with you?
If you want to be that narrowly literal-minded, then it's about global FREEZING, not warming!

As GAOT says, it works on many levels. It's a metaphor about the endless conflict between the scientific attitude and the willfully ignorant who act as though 'popular support' can trump reality. Remember Feynman? 'Nature cannot be fooled'?

7. could you name one besides the one I mentioned.
Edited on Tue Mar-09-04 02:01 PM by Feanorcurufinwe
Please bestow the benefit of your analysis on those of us who are less perceptive.

On what level do you see this operating that I missed?

Is it more than a cartoon mocking Bush for his anti-science bias? Please elucidate.

Thanks in advance for your polite and respectful answer to my question.

8. Growing global resentment/distrust/dislike/hatred of Imperial US
or could be epidemic heart-disease, stroke and other degenerative diseases....

or could be decimation of public lands in the US West by welfare ranchers......

widespread and growing signs of climate degradation and danger of global catastrophe.......

growing disenfranchisement of US workers.........

disappearing aquifers.....

growing signs of neo-fascist oppression and co-opted media/journalists...

Well, let's not rock the boat. Right.

13. Not sure "dead horse" is the best characterization of Peak Oil

but hey, some people find comfort in calling it a "conspiracy theory," and at the end of the day, I guess however you can find comfort for the time that's left is all good.

than ANY of the other candidates this is true.

19. I don't get it. Could you explain?
I mean, it's a metaphor, and can be read in a number of ways without strain.

20. .
I guess only the one who made the cartoon can say for sure but you stated: "Mods, this is pretty clearly choice-of-candidate-related" which is quite different than "it's a metaphor, and can be read in a number of ways".

21. Well, I suppose I could have said
'this metaphor can legitimately be interpreted in a number of ways, and one of those ways relates to choice of candidate, so it's appropriate here' but since the other ways are irrelevant for the purposes of having it left alone, and I didn't think I'd have to defend it, I was less cautious.
