I just spoke to my father who's a registered Republican.

he said that after reading about Kerry's financial problems he felt sorry for the guy & sent him a check for $5.

I'm sure he's not alone.

14. I was talking with a fairly high-up Republican operative today

We're both working on a beachfront bikepath here and she's pretty chatty. Anyway, we started talking about the Democratic primary campaigns and she mentioned that there may be quite a bit of Repuke dollars funnelled to the Kerry campaign to make sure he blocks Clark coming out of NH. She was a bit perturbed that he wasn't making a stand against Clark there because Clark may be tougher for Bush if he winds up as the anti-Dean.

What better way to discourage you than to let you know that he contributed (a paltry amount) to the Kerry campaign? $5 dollars won't go too far for Kerry's candidacy, seems to me that he is making a statement by donating to one of your candidates opponents. Bad republican dad, bad.

It is an interesting point regarding strategic donations and strategic support ('tactical voting' was displayed in the last British General Election when the Labour Party and Lib Dems often pooled support in certain key seats in order to oust (or keep out) the Tory candidate - almost certainly there was also more than a hint of that in the McCain support in 2000). I think people should be very careful with that sort of thing. Surely opponents don't really want to aid John Kerry. His track record suggests that Republicans would not wish to get that particular snowball rolling down the hill.
