Gone but not forgotten

One by one, John Kerry's former rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination fell by the wayside, their campaigns consigned to history.

As the Bush vs. Kerry matchup begins in earnest, however, lessons remain to be learned from the likes of John Edwards, Howard Dean and Wesley Clark.

Dean, for one, showed both parties how to harness the power of the Internet. Edwards, Kerry's last major rival to fall, demonstrated that nice guys don't have to finish last, that "likeability matters," in the words of Democratic consultant Paul Begala. Clark, the retired general showed Democrats how to challenge President Bush on national security.

"There are great lessons for both sides out of the primary process," said Rich Bond, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee.

1. That was a good article. But I wish they had gone into more detail
Edited on Sat Mar-13-04 05:23 PM by Anti Bush
on all the ways Clark could help Kerry. But that's to be expected...too much work and they would have to learn all about what Clark stood for.

2. Good article Jim!
So does Kerry choose a Veep based on "likeability" or "national
security?"

That neatly sums up Edwards vs Clark as Veep.

3. There is nothing like being in heartbreak hotel.
Edwards came in some close seconds but could never eek out any wins.

:-( :-(

5. This thread is for all
candidates supporters to remember what their guy did, and how it is going to help get Bush out of there.

4. the better side of politics, not the bitter side...
...thats what i liked about the Democratic field this year...it was such a SOLID field of candidates....it did allay my cynicism and bitterness about politics alot, I have to say!

This was a pretty good primary field, I think.

7. Well, they really sort of treated Dean poorly in that article.
Dean and internet....that is all they said except to talk about the crash and burn.....which was actually aided by his own party working in tandem with various candidates. Get Dean out, was the word from them. I have ordered a transcript to see if the actual words are there.

I think he did contribute backbone. Lots of it. I think he still will continue to do so. That is sort of sad, the off hand way he was treated there.

It makes me feel irrelevant again, like my vote does not matter. Like my money to the Democrats does not matter.

Everytime I get just about ready to hop on board, then I fully realize that whatever I donate will go the causes which Dean will espouse.

It seems the others do not find us necessary. I see it in articles all the time. I see it where we live. I see it in our local party. We gave the party here energy, but now we don't count. They got off their butts here to fight us Dean people, but now they are sitting down on their butts again..... months before the convention.

It is not paranoia, it is real. I am not whining, I am being realistic. My vote literally did not count in 2000, maybe not in 2002, and it will not count this year. I will mark the optical scan for Kerry. He will get our vote. That is all. I hope it will count.

I notice they did not mention Kucinich in that article.

8. sorry
Each candidate was only briefly mentioned though. I wouldn't have posted it if I thought it slighted Dean. I think they were mainly talking about how money does not guarantee a victory.

I am looking forward to seeing Dean kicking butt tomorrow morning. Condi better be wearing some protection!

9. No problem with posting it, you should.
I guess I am tired of the post mortems now, though many have been complimentary in a "well, he's done" sort of way.

It is not you, it is just the fact that I have realized again how it really never trickles down far enough for our votes to count.

11. Our votes do count
Even when we lose. I have to believe that.

Only one person can win an election. We should be proud of how our candidates have shaped the debate. Especially Dean and Clark. Because they truly have--you see it in Kerry's campaign, and in the BushCo campaign against him. They could NOT have done that without our support.
