Kucinich Supporters... request for help, pleeeez
I'm still working on preparing for our caucus ( and the upcoming visit of Dennis! Hurrah!), and am giving a houseparty on Wednesday.
I have been working on a handout for caucus goers who want to present a proposal on Universal Health Care, so we all have something to put in people's hands at our caucus.

Since I'm doing this houseparty, I'd also like to have handouts for other issues.

So, for any of you who have already done this, and would be willing to share whatever you put together for issue handouts, I'd be ever so grateful if you would be willing to share with me. As you know, it's all a daunting task.

Thanks ever so much in advance...

Kanary

1. if you haven't already
you might want to post this on the Kucinich4President yahoo group and on the volunteer forum too.

One person on the volunteer forum said she took issue statements ond taped them to the walls in her apartment for her house-=party, and more people read those than actually took literature she had laying around. Might be worth a try for your house party too.

2. Posting issue statements on the wall -- great!
I've been making up some small posters, as the walls are... well, to be polite, drab.

But, it's also a good idea to put up the issues. Gives people something to do while they're waiting for everything to begin.

Dunno right now how to get onto the group, so I'll still hope that a few here may have some of those handout-thingies around.

Thanks!

4. I may have confused you, DR
I'm writing up *handouts* on issues to present at caucus. They have to be short enough, but.. they also have to have more info than the abbreviated ones for the campaign.

I'm finishing up my Health Care one, but didn't realize it would take sooooo long to find the references for the various statistics! sigh.....

So, these are different from the bookmarks, baseball cards, etc that we are handing out while bannering.

Hey, wanna go to Hawai'i? ~~gigglesnort~~

How in the heck does Dennis keep at it like this????

You da bes', DR!!

7. A Suggestion on limiting the Issue topics.
Edited on Sun Mar-14-04 10:13 PM by rhite5
Don't overwhelm people with positions on dozens of issues.

Dennis is focusing now in three areas. Follow his lead on that.

1. War in Iraq Turning over to the U.N. and not under U.S. control. Withdrawal with dignity. There cannot be peaceful solution until our troops are out of there. Pay reparations. Open up reconstruction projects to open bidding, especially to Iraqi engineering companies. No further sweetheart deals to American multi-nationals.

2. NAFTA and WTO and American JOBS. Our country's rapidly declining industrial base as plants close down and go offshore, and now the outsourcing of white collar jobs too, are both causing very large pockets of deep unemployment and weakening our country. And the effect is spreading to jobs in all sectors.

The terrible damage WTO policies are causing in third world countries, forcing them to sell off their natural resources just to pay interest on their debts, leaving them unable to develop independent industries or take care of the basic needs of their people. Free Trade is not Fair Trade. It only benefits the largest corporations. Our country gets no benefit and neither do the the third world countries. The people on both sides suffer.

Dennis prefers bi-lateral trade agreements developed between nations where both sides benefit and corporations are used to fulfill the agreements, not the other way around. He also favors putting our citizens to work on some large-scale infrastructure rebuilding ala FDR including alternative energy and mass transit solutions.

3. Healthcare for All A 10-year phase-out of the insurance and pharmaceutical corporations' role and other steps toward National Healthcare. This will put healthcare decision-making back in the health providers' hands and the patients' hands and remove the enormous protected profits that are making healthcare completely unaffordable. Eventually it will begin to let our country catch up with the rest of the civilized world when it comes to healthcare.

Those three areas hit the most important differences Dennis has with current policies and would be important planks in the Democratic Party PLATFORM if we can get them. At least they must be discussed at the convention and not brushed over.

(on edit) You might notice that each of these topic solutions is a direct challenge to global corporate power.

10. For anyone in a state that has not held a Primary or Caucus Yet ...
Kanary, Since you have caucuses coming up, the following is something to keep in mind.

I think at this stage people generally need a reason to continue to vote for Kucinich, because obviously the nomination has pretty much been decided, and people know that.

So be Honest with them.

• We look pretty silly if we continue to pretend Dennis can be the nominee.
• Any message of that sort turns intelligent people off.
• Give them a different reason for voting and be honest about it.

We need to sell the message that voters have nothing to lose by voting for Kucinich. They can honestly vote for the candidate who agrees with them on the most issues, and it can't hurt any other candidate's chances.

In the meantime it sends a message to the Democratic Party and the winning candidate and it keeps these issues in the dialog and maybe gets some movement on the PLATFORM planks at the convention. The more votes we can get for Dennis now the louder that message will be.

Voter turnout, which was very high in the early Primaries and Caucuses, is shrinking rapidly now that it looks like the nominee is decided. We are seeing that everywhere now. Kucinich benefits from the low voter turnout (so long as we turn out our supporters). It will take fewer votes to hit the magic 15% floor in a few Congressional Districts and win him some more delegates.

So be honest with the voters. Let them feel they are playing a role in the tactics and strategy game. Let them feel a part of it.

11. At a caucus, you are allowed to introduce and vote on RESOLUTIONS.
(WHETHER YOU HAVE 15% OR NOT)

You should have resolutions prepared in conjunction with other DK folks all around the state that enunciate his major platform ideas.(Having the exact same wording will save trouble when you get to the state convention.)You might contact the state coordinator and find out which resolutions to push. You CAN make your own, but then you might be fighting over a popular resolution's wording at the state convention.

DK's ideas are VERY popular among Democrats of all stripes. Mainly Kerry caucuses have voted for UN in, US out, and universal single-payer health care at precincts all over the nation.

Wouldn't it be a coup if 900 Colorado precincts voted to get out of NAFTA and the WTO and the Colorado Democratic Party went to the platform committee with Colorado's endorsement of this idea?

There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Delegates are one way. Resolutions are another!!
