Boston Police Call for Boycott of Democratic Convention
As part of a labor dispute with the city, a Boston police union is urging police officers from around the country and Democratic leaders to boycott the Democratic National Convention in July.

Complaining of inadequate staffing to handle the security demands of the event, along with unresolved contract negotiations, Boston police officers last week detailed plans to protest the July 26-29 convention.

"There will be an expectation that the line not be crossed," said Thomas J. Nee, president of the Boston Police Patrolmen's Assn. "I know Democrats do not do that. That's the protocol."

Using a new website, http://www.boston04.net , association members are recruiting police officers nationwide to join their picket lines. Los Angeles officers have thrown their symbolic support behind the effort.

2. Hey! Is that my nose? I think I'll slice it off to spite my face!

I'm with the cops in their beef with the Mayor, but dragging the national convention into it is just fucked up completely, opportunism at its worst, and liable to turn a city issue into a national campaign issue that helps Bush.

Welcome to Boston. :grr:

3. I don't understand it at all
the Democrats are the ones who have fought for more police on the street and are fighting the loss of overtime for the police and firefighters. Why don't they picket the RNC lovefest?

4. Because they won't be able to stick it to Menino in New York

Menino brought the convention to Boston. It's gonna be his party, so the cops are hitting him right where he lives.

As a tactic, it'll probably work. Menino will fold before he allows the cops to disrupt the biggest thing to hit Boston since the molasses flood. If he doesn't though, there'll be some hell to pay.

7. Thanks for explaining that to me.
Evidently the mayor is not liked by the police.

5. Menino does not deserve this.
No one needs local union matters to interfere with something of such vital importance as the convention. Shame, shame on the union leaders for their self-importance.
