This forum has become tedious, boring, pathetic, and worst of all, irrelevant.
Christ, I never thought I'd say that about a DU forum; even the forums (or should that be fora?) and groups that are, shall we say, a bit off-center do provide a refreshing break when visited now and again.

I like a good discussion. Hell, I like a good argument as much as the next guy. And a spirited slap-fest, now and again, is a healthy way to keep the old corpuscles circulating in a sprightly manner. But this, this THING that GD-P has devolved to (and as much as I'll get flamed for saying so), is just stupid. And an absurd waste of time, not to mention the tragic waste of precious electrons and our limited supply of keystrokes.

OK, that wasn't much in the way of an attempt at humor. But this forum has composted to much less in the way of an attempt at any kind of discussion or discourse, nor does it have anything even remotely related to an actual purpose anymore.

People piss and moan about any even remotely-perceived slight to their chosen candidate. People call each other every imaginable kind of juvenile names, because of their support for one candidate or another. People seize upon the most ridiculous, most vaporous hint of an imagined slight against their chosen candidate, and beat that imagined slight to death, over and over just to gain some kind of imagined "advantage" or "victory" over the supporters of another candidate.

And for WHAT? Have any of you (and you know who you are) persuaded even one person to change his or her mind, and vote for YOUR candidate, with your hateful posts?

If you say you have, you're lying. That's what bothers me the most, I think: All this screaming and yelling and carrying on, all for NOTHING. (Kind of like some wars we've had, including the one we're still in, yes? It's been five fucking years, people. Has everyone forgotten?)

OK, enough. I've seen many, MANY people who I know to be honorable and conscientious DUers trying their best in this forum; God knows they've tried to battle the tide of obsessiveness and trollishness and occasional outright lunacy. And for what? For nothing.

But they try, don't they? They try to turn this forum back into an actual DISCUSSION, not the dung-flinging cesspool it's turned into, thanks to the participants (yes, you know who you are) who can't grow up enough to type a post that doesn't contain a childish, insulting, third-grade-level, name-calling taunt to refer to the supporters of one candidate or another.

Those valiant DUers have earned my never-ending respect; they have the strength I wish I had to try to hold back the tide.

But as for the name-callers, the imagined-slight whiners, the trollish interlopers, and the obsessive serial posters: Bad cess to the lot of you. I'll not be reading your pustulent, toxic, and pointless rants anymore.

When you have something to say that actually might have a chance of making a difference, rather than the masturbatory posts that consist of something like "I'm picking out one word from your candidate's speech today, and turning it into a National Emergency, and furthermore citing it as an example of why you people who don't support My Candidate Are Worse Than Republicans..." THEN, this forum might be worth visiting again.

I'm outta here, for now. I'm sure some will be happy to hear that.

30. They actually have nurse practitioners at some.
It's this new program they have. But I was referring more to those automatic machines where you sit down and it has the cuff.

They used to have those at Meijer's in Michigan where I grew up too, and we used to lol when we'd put a coffee can in the cuff and press the button.

...'cause I can think of a couple of other contentious dens on DU that are often depressing and pointless...I/P, September 11, Guns...and talk about boring and irrelevant (to me), I haven't hung out in the Lounge for about four years (I have nothing against it, though).

Different strokes, I guess.

We need more humor and these two primary candidates - Hillary ("Heather") Clinton and Barack ("Sweet Smell of Success") Obama are not that funny after a while (unless you consider ignoring 1.1 million dead Iraqi civilians and the point a few decades out when we run out of oxygen funny in a sick sort of way).

28. Main reason is that the last two candidates that remained standing have support
or dislike, based on many factors other than the issues.

Poor Edwards was trying to discuss the issues and everyone ignored him.

So people love or hate Hillary because she is a woman, because she is (still) married to Bill Clinton because the effects she has on the Republicans.

And people love or hate Obama because he is black, because he is "fresh" (not much of a track record in Washington) because he talks about ideas and not about the specifics.

We have had a long eight years of misery. Every Democrat wants change. If I may elaborate on a very important aspect
I think democrats need to realize...no matter which candidate
wins Obama or Hillary we can't lose. Both are competent intelligent people and we should be thankful that we have such great candidates to fight over.
If your a true democrat and you really want change...you should support whatever candidate wins.
Finally we have a chance to conquer not divide.

37. Not just this forum, much of this whole campaign has become a clusterfuck
I've tried to stay pro-Obama and not anti-Hillary but the inertia/gravity pulling anyone even slightly invested in one of the candidates to attack the other side in response to real or imagined slights is very powerful.

I'm probably going to be accused of doing that very thing now, but I really blame Hillary for starting this war with Obama and I believed that even when I was still in the Edwards camp. Hillary and her campaign made the first two substantive attacks/swipes at Obama. First with the calling him naiive back in mid to late 2007 and then Bill's borderline race baiting in and regarding South Carolina. Those things both happened before I was an Obama supporter and I was already appalled by those things back then.

I remember seeing the demeanor of Obama supporters completely change after the things Bill said about South Carolina and about "Fairy Tales". All of a sudden, the entire tone of the campaign and between Obama and Clinton supporters turned negative. Everything completely changed after that. This is one of the major reasons I endorsed Obama and said some of the things I said in that endorsement http://www.opednews.com/articles/opedne_steven_l_080202_obama_endorsement__96_.htm to wit:

"...He is even more attractive when compared against Hillary Clinton in the race for the nomination. Hillary’s negative ratings by voters have consistently been so high that it would be an uphill battle from day one to try to get her elected. In order for her to have a chance at getting elected, she and her husband would have to wage the most negative campaign in history to try to raise the negative ratings of her opponent. I don’t want to be a part of that kind of campaign."
------------------------------------

This is exactly what Hillary is trying to do now. This change in campaign tenor over the last few days since the regime change in her campaign has been all about trying to raise Obamas negatives, not raise her positives. It would be the same with McCain. I dont want to be a part of that kind of campaign particularly when there is such a better alternative.

Now I'm beginning to wonder, because I just get insulted when I post a genuine concern here.

From the DU rules...

I think this rule has been broken thousands of times just in the past couple of days.

People were equally as crazed in '04. The race just didn't go on as long.

Bereft of any truly representative leadership for too long, employing a entirely compromised voting systems, with a complicit and coerced media, folks are just plain FRUSTRATED.

I figure, it's far better that the flame each other on the message boards than go to their alma mater bearing arms.

Maybe something constructive will come out of all the rancor. It's largely juvenile at best.

I'm a deluded optimist though.

58. It's true that no minds are being changed...
But I'm hoping it'll get better. The serial posters and one-line hit and run topics have been fixed by the new rules, and the mods have done a good job with the RW smears that are too often posted. It's still toxic but not nearly as bad as it was getting to be.

I think that when something like this is neck-and-neck, and so much is at stake, that tensions are going to flare. No, it doesn't change anything and lots of stuff is pure garbage. But I give credit even to the Clinton supporters for caring passionately about something other than American Idol and Britney.

I tried to stay away from GD-P when it was first proposed. I was very glad that Skinner and Co. cordoned off this crazy sub-forum. I thought to myself "I will never be a part of that pointless, insane crossfire."

Now, here I am. Stuck in an addictive cycle of callous deflection. I try to be civil but I often fail. I find myself resorting to flamewar tactics I haven't implemented since 1996. I read a post that I see as ridiculous and I lose all sense of dignity and reason.

I wish I had your discipline, Redstone, but I do not. I shall stay here and trade barbs until this thing is decided. I know full well that this little sub-forum is not the real world. I know that outside there is a whole country, populated by people who don't give a damn what GD-P thinks. I know that as far as this place goes, most of us have our minds made and attempts to change those minds is an exercise in futility.

Just the same, because of GD-P, I know more about each candidate than I would have, had I stayed away.

Good luck to you. See you when it's over. :hi:

Edited on Sun Feb-17-08 08:18 PM by andym
This forum seems to be for the sport of politics than for finding common ground. Therefore, what is often seen here is mostly "poisoning the well" attacks in a kind of mini-war between the most extreme supporters of each remaining candidate. Ironic that many supporters are really "against war." Of course, there is no real winning on this forum (winning happens in the real world), only congratulations from allies and epithets from "enemies."

This forum probably should be subtitled: "FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY"

I can't stand to come to Du if I'm not drunk or stoned any more. While I don't necessarily approve of drugs and alcohol, I find they work well for me. This is now a forum where we are all free to be total assholes, and we exercise that freedom to the max. Yes me too. Maybe apathy is the better way. GD-P has become a bizarre mating of professional wrestlers, ADD first-graders, a troupe of poo-flinging baboons and banshees on crack.

I've also made a few pleas for sanity, or at least civility, but it's always "THEY started it first!" So I guess it's OK for the supporters of Candidate A to be ranting, spittle-flecked asshats because they are merely defending their sun-shining-out-of-the-ass hero from the evil slanders of Candidate B and his/her flying monkey partisans. None of the ranters seem willing to consider the fact that both are good, competent candidates; either would be a good President; and we will be in damn good shape regardless of which one is nominated.

So I, too, give up. I'll pop in now and then and toss a cream pie or post an appropriate lolcat but I'm not going to even complain any more.

A noble effort, Redstone. See ya back in the lounge...

...over just the past two weeks. Back to the great finds in the MSM cauldron, some interesting ideas, etc.

Besides, where else will the Democrats go to see their candidates vetted. The "blue sky" acceptance and challenges, of any real nature, aid in identifying weak points that will be exploited (count on it).

So take your "experience" and get on the "hope" train for a better tomorrow;)

So you're gone but if you come back, that means you were lurking, which means you're really notouta here, yo9u're just a "little disappointed and upset." Relax, listen to some Muzak and enjoy one of the better narratives on the decline and fall of the empire based on "exceptionalism."

editorial section of DU. Your right about the candidate silliness. DU was a lot more in depth a few years ago. It's become a lot more mainstream in the last few years hence the crap topics we seem over run with lately. The fact that the candidates the media has chosen for us are all gonna give the Bush admin a free pass on their war crimes doesn't help moral here either.

in disguise as being supporters of his, when all they are really here to do is belittle anyone named Clinton. That much is obvious because no true Democrat would ever say the things about the Clintons that are said here on this forum by so many of Obama's so-called "supporters".

108. Redstone, you are a great DUer, and I am honored to be your ally. And yes, the trolls thrive for now
Some may burn out and leave soon, others will stay on to do their mischief through the election.
Those of us who tried to maintain a level of discourse worthy of our time - many of whom have posted in this thread - are pulling back to let the sharks devour each other.
Some are finding other settlements upstream of the toxicity, or setting up camps in the mountains. The air is clear there, and one can hunt and fish and sow seeds of thought. Sometimes one needs to strike out to build a place where we can learn and teach and give comfort to each other...

I look forward to seeing you and others of like mind in those unsoiled lands.

Thank you for putting up a good struggle.
After all we have been through after the coup, we should see the dawn from a peak and not a valley.
