18. Urbana, IL
I also voted for Barak Obama and Dennis Kucinich and yes on the referendum. We also have a great candidate running for State Representative. A young charismatic newcomer named David Gill. We're hoping that he will unseat Tim Johnson.

By the way Padraig18, do you live in Urbana, IL?

Dad: Obama/"LaRouche -- just kidding -- nobody" via absentee (he's an election judge today!)
Mom: Obama/"I'm not telling. But I guess it doesn't matter since Kerry's already won." (She's always been secret about her votes -- she let her vote for Obama slip. I'm suspecting Kerry, or maybe one of the candidates that nobody's heard of, or a write-in.)

How did you all vote on raising state income tax on the over 250k crowd?

“Shall the people of Illinois by referendum create an Education Trust Fund which would raise the state income tax only on those individuals who make more than a quarter-million dollars a year (less than 2% of all taxpayers) in order to improve education funding for every Illinois public school student and provide property tax relief for every Illinois homeowner guaranteed by the state constitution?”

I think I'm a PEOPLE of Illinois? and it's for every Illinois public school student, right? Hmmmm. I/we should have voted on that. I wonder what the hell is up?

on edit...
If it's NOT a statewide proposition...where is it on the ballot? I'm 60 miles south of Chicago. AND, if it's for the PEOPLE of Illinois and EVERY Illinois school student, WHY isn't it a statewide proposition?

58. A funny story about Melissa Bean.
A friend at work lives in the same congressional district as you, steviet_2003, and absolutely despites Crane. Because of work sometimes, however, he must work closely with Lake County Republican officials.

One time he and a high county official were discussing Crane and Bean. The official actually suggested that if Melissa change from D to R, that she would win the primary and race hands down. My friend was flabbergasted that this individual would say that, even though he privately agrees.

76. yes, but
i did vote yes, but with a little trepidation. illinois' constitution was amended fairly recently (70) and (i think) a flat income tax was part of that. i am hesitant to overturn that. plus i know the history of these shell games on school funding here, and the suckers had better stick to the plan.

in general, tho, i am strongly in favor of a graduated tax structure. i have no doubt they will be coming after me once that camel's nose is in the tent. and the freakin constitution says the state bears the primary responsibility for funding education, and how that is never interpreted to mean pay 50%+ i do not have a clue.

I didn't expect to see her today, and the 1st words out of her mouth were "I voted"! She had told me on Sunday that she was voting for DK, gave me her reasons, and I supported her. She asked for advice re the Senate (she goes to school in a cornfield in Indiana) and I gave her the Obama website; hence the vote for the first African-American President (2012)....

Yep, I'm very proud of her...

27. Coming in 2nd place doesn't really matter anymore
All of Kerry's serious opponents have dropped out, and he has a mathamatical lock on the nomination. It is amusing, however, to see when candidates who have dropped out garnering more votes than ones who are still 'campaigning.'

Yeah I didn't have much of a choice. Suppose that meant my votes didn't matter much when there was only one person to vote for.

Somehow I thought it was going to be an open primary. It's different in California- your vote still doesn't count if you vote out of party, but you have the opportunity to.

No "electioneering" or campaigning within 500 feet (?) of a polling place. Your button was "campaigning"...

Choosing a Dem or Rep ballot only declares a party, not a person.

47. Should we worry with Obama
I read this:

Republicans might actually get a bit of a break in Illinois. Jack Ryan, an attractive and wealthy former investment banker who was teaching in an inner-city school until recently, is expected to win the GOP primary. The likely Democratic nominee, state Sen. Barack Obama, is equally, if not more, impressive, yet does not have the personal fortune Ryan has. Blair Hull, the fabulously wealthy Democrat, was expected to win the nomination until revelations about his messy divorce and cocaine use in the 1980s doomed his chances. National Democrats had counted on this seat to be the best of all possible worlds, an easy pickup by a self-funding candidate. Now it is likely to be very close and will have to be funded through more traditional -- read difficult -- means.

He's been trying for years to get an overpass constructed on Central Avenue to help traffic congestion on Cicero and Harlem Avenues in the city and southwest suburbs of Burbank, Oak Lawn and Bridgeview. Correct me if I'm wrong, but "Bungalow Bill's" district is in Cook County. I thought Mr. "youthful indiscretion" Hyde's district is in DuPage County.

71. Welcome to DU, valuesenvironment
I don't think that Kerry should be held responsible for Kennedy's past conduct. From everything I've heard, Ted has been an outstanding uncle to the children of his murdered brothers. It's up to the Lord to decide if he has been remorseful for what he did and if his actions can give him absolution.

We've got 8 months and I have to say that if the alternative is between another 4 years of this disasterous presidency and some hope for change, I hope you'll consider change.

62. Clark/Obama
Though I fully support Kerry for Prez, I figure he has his delegates wrapped up and am hoping that support for Clark will translate into consideration for VP.

Ryan is rich and looks like a soap opera star, sure to bring out GOP supporters en masse. My biggest concern about Obama is how he'll play downstate. I think he'll do well in urban areas but not sure about rural counties. I noticed that one poster above spelled his name "O'Bama" and maybe that would help, eh? "O'Bama - he's black Irish, baby!" ;)

plus, I influenced my dad to vote for Obama, and got my sister to vote at all. She didn't even know she had a choice other than Kerry, who she doesn't like because of Skull and Bones.

67. This mama voted Obama.
Also for Howard Dean, all Dean delegates, a Dean alternate; Metropolitan Water Reclamation District: McGowan, Young and Flores; Brewer for State's Attorney; IVI-IPO recommended judges, and YES on the referendum.

My polling place is also Barack Obama's. When I went to vote this morning the polling place was crawling with TV news crews. Obama was there with his wife and kids in front of the cameras.

73. Voted about 4 this afternoon.
Went Obama and Clark. Also voted for Gill--he's a heck of a nice guy and I do hope he's able to knock off Tim Johnson the GOP Congress critter, but I have to say I'm not as optimistic about his race as I am Obama's.

I am in Champaign County--just outside Champaign-Urbana.

Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 10:33 PM by BradCKY
Didn't vote today, Kerry had won the nomination, and I didn't know enough about the senate candidate besides Blair Hull's ads (again I'm sorry) but I didn't know exactly who to vote for senate.

Granted we have become a BLUE state Thank God for that. :)

78. educational referendum
want to clear this up- this is an ADVISORY referendum. it requires an amendment to the state constitution. it is on the ballot in many places, but apparently not state wide. but it is not binding, so if it does get enacted, you will all get to vote on it.
