12. United States of America
is the name of this country. I've never understood the problem in referring to it simply as either the United States or America.

39. and which of these countries
has America in its name?

Costa Rican States of America?
Guatemalan States of America?
Beliziean Republic of America?

When one refers to America, it's clear that there is one country being talked about, not a continent.

The USA is the only county (that I'm aware of) that has America as part of its official title, and to refer to it shorthand as simply "America," is not in-apt.

32. That's because its seen by many as an arrogant attempt to
use the name of two entire continents for one country that is already quite "full of itself". Columbia, Venezuela, Guatemala, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and others who are in North and South America wonder what is going on.

Try going down there. They'll tell you themselves. :-)

I have no trouble understanding that perspective. But we were "America" long before the majority of our meddling in the Southern continent took place.

13. Uh, that's just shorthand
Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 01:16 PM by mobuto
I think we all know that there are a number of American states. But in just about every language I can think of, "America" is frequently used as shorthand for "United States of." Nobody's trying to denigrate Honduras.

BTW, America isn't a continent. Its "The New World," which encompasses the continents of North and South America, Central America, and the West Indies.

34. Not India!

Most folks in India who have any awareness of US presidents are huge fans of Clinton in part because of his trips there. I was in India in Nov 2001 and photos of Clinton were everywhere whereas Bush was generally held in disregard. Remember Clinton went back to India in March 2001 when out of office after the Jan 2001 Gujarat earthquake. Now certainly some in the leadership of the BJP may possibly prefer Bush but they are proto-facists in my book. In any event the jobs started going to India well before Bush's election.

They love Clinton in India. It's funny but so many of my relatives told me how great he is, how charismatic, etc.

I also remember the pics of him in Africa (forgot which country though) and they were swarming around him. I wish we could have another leader that would be loved the same way again.

Turkmenistan makes Uzbekistan seem like a utopia. President Niyazov may actually beat Kim Jong Il in the totalitarian misrule department. Islam Karimov doesn't even compete.

But he is an ally in the War on Terror.

I don't think so. I would say that in reality about 30% really support Bush and about 10% vote against Dems for their inclusiveness. So about 40% really support Bush in the US.
