Kerry Pushed on Claim as Reporter Corrects Quote
Amazing. The GOP attack is based on an incorrect quote,
and yet they continue to attack. I think it shows their
desperation. Also, this article makes Kerry seem a lot more
defensive than what he should be. (Is this writer a media
whore in disguise, in other words.)

Kerry Pushed on Claim as Reporter Corrects Quote
Senator referred to 'more leaders,' not 'foreign leaders,' who want Bush out. GOP is demanding names.
By Matea Gold, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration and its supporters Monday continued to pressure Sen. John F. Kerry to identify the foreign leaders he claims want him to defeat President Bush this November, adding that if he doesn't name names, his claim must be untrue.

Meanwhile, the Kerry campaign attempted to back away from the original assertion, seizing on a reporter's clarification.

(Sorry if a dupe, I didn't see this on the board.)

1. Disguise?
Why would there be a disguise? Corporate media journalists = whores.

There are VERY few exceptions. :(

2. Karen Tumulty at Time, David Bergen at NY Times,
and some of the other folks who appear on Washington Week are all pretty credible to me.

Jodi Wilgoren, Richard Berke, and Dan Balz on the other hand . . .

It's pretty sad . . . I'm so deeply obsessed with this stuff I'm
starting to recognize the writer's names. :eyes:

8. Not sad, good!
You're right, the ones you mentioned are good.

Won't agree about Washington Week, though, Gwen Ifill is a whore and a half!

Condi Rice said she didn't read the NIE and Gwen just moved on to the next question. :grr:

Plus, she hosted the lying liar at her home for dinner! I mean hell, if she had just been nice to her in person but then been a serious journalist that's one thing, but to kiss her ass in person AND as a journalist made me sick.

She just about lost a donation for PBS that day. :grr: :grr: :grr:

10. Agree about Ifill completely.
She drops little one liners deriding Democrats all the time, and she smirks when she does it.

But some of the people on at the round table aren't as tainted.

19. Thank goodness you brought it up
I was wondering if I was the only one noticing that PBS has tended to the right lately -- "NOW with Bill Moyers" notwithstanding.
"Washington Whores on Review" is 30-minute centrifuge ride. Most of it is right-wing spin and, like all PBS news and reviews shows, it invariably features Reporter "A" from the New York Times and reporter "B" from the Washington Post -- rounded out with, say, someone from "Time" or (ick) US News and World Report.
Dump Gwen Ifill and bring back Michelle Martin.
While I'm at it -- Terence Smith on NewsHour is one of the worst interviewers on television. The guest will make a point and Smith will respond "Uh-huh, uh-huh" and go on to whatever the next pre-written question was. No follow-up whatsoever.
NewsHour ain't what it used to be. About my only PBS pleasure any more is "The McLaughlin Group." I enjoy watching Eleanor Clift get pissed off at the boys (she reminds me of my mom in looks, intellect and political persuasion) and I LIKE both Pat Buchanan (I do) and John McLaughlin. Even Tony Blankley, right-wing mouthpiece though he is, is okay -- so long as he talks about his cats.
John
We're currently having another PBS pledge drive here in central Michigan, BTW. Channel 19 does a good job, all my bitching notwithstanding.

3. In case you missed it, here is Richard Holbrooke's response...
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/16/politics/campaign/16CND-POOL.html?hp

"It's so obviously the truth what Kerry said, and the Republicans are just having fun with it — everybody knows it's true," Mr. Holbrooke said, adding that he called after speaking to Ms. Cutter. "In the last six or seven months, I've been in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe. I've met with leaders in all of those regions, and they have overwhelmingly — not unanimously but overwhelmingly — said that they hope that there's a change in leadership."

4. I thought Holbrooke was one of the good guys.

If it's just fun, why does Kerry seem to be taking it seriously?

I'm still pissed that Hannity, et. al., have been blasting Kerry
with an inaccurate quote. That just bothers me for some reason.

12. No, I'm seriously confused and seeking information.
Maybe I'm just having a 'duh' day. I think the Thugs are desperate and searching for anything possible to grab onto, and this is just the latest example. I'm not sure why Kerry is taking it seriously.

15. The feckless, lapdog press won't let go of it, that's why.
Kerry was asked about this again today after President Bush's press availability where Bush was asked about Kerry's comment:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush said on Tuesday that his Democratic rival John Kerry should back up his comments that foreign leaders want to see the Republican president defeated.

``If you're going to make an accusation in the course of a presidential campaign, you've got to back it up with facts,'' Bush told reporters during a meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende.

Kerry, the presumptive Democratic nominee, has said he had met with leaders who told him "you've got to beat this guy'' because of unhappiness over U.S. foreign policy.

18. The question that just occurred to me is

"Why do you want to know, so you can punish them the way Bush
punished Aristide for getting out of line, or the way the CIA
has tried to punish Hugo Chavez?"

I wouldn't put it past them.

16. Holbrooke is one of the good guys. Would make a great Sec. of State.
He also worked very close with Clark in Kosovo. Kerry/Clark/Holbrooke. What a trifecta that would be.

13. Andrea Mitchell admitted on Imus that what Kerry said is true
and she said that everybody knows it. She should tell Powell the next time she is traveling with him. She may be with him now. Of course she may not have that gig anymore. LOL

5. My response would be:
Mr. Bush, you have stated that Bin Laden wants me elected. I will be happy to produce the names of the foreign leaders that want me elected if you will produce Bin Laden and have him state publicly who he wants elected...

Fair is fair...

6. Drip, drip, drip...
I've been told, "This is one little thing. Even if anybody believed it, it won't amount to anything."

The problem is, I've been told that about their distortions of Kerry's voting record, the "irresponsible bill that would gut" defense spending, the "Hanoi Jane" nonsense, etc. etc. This is exactly what they did to Gore -- it's not that any *one* thing made their case, it's that they managed to accumulate one distortion after another until they had a nice little pile of evidence for their script that "Al Gore is a pathological liar."

Their script for Kerry is: "John Kerry cannot be trusted on National Security." It's like drops of water on a stone, wearing it away little by little. Too many voters aren't paying enough attention to remember later that each of these smears is sheer nonsense.

Kerry's D-bunker is great, but it's going to be verrrrry long by Summer. There must be a way to hit the whole tactic at once, with a broader approach. People need to see, as soon as possible, what the Bushies are doing in amassing this pile of nothing. Is there some strategy for that?

7. Can't we fight fire with fire
Where are all the howls from the media from the Bushisms that occur:

"MISSON ACCOMPLISHED"

"IRAQ is an Immenent threat"

What the hell is anyone doing focusing on a mistatement from Senator Kerry when the president makes all sorts of false, misleading (not to mention grammatically impossible) statements?

I'm so annoyed that as people die, loose jobs, get blown up on trains, we want to talk about who told kerry "you would be better than the current idiot who invaded America's white house".

Why Mr. Cheney, so you can cut off their funds and send bombs into their country?

17. Kerry Campaign Response: Bush has lost Credibility with American people
Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 03:08 PM by flpoljunkie
http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/releases/pr_2004_0316.html

March  16,  2004

For Immediate Release
Washington, DC –

Kerry Spokesperson Stephanie Cutter issued the following response to Bush-Cheney’s latest misleading ad:

“Once again, George Bush is misleading the American people. In the latest sign that Bush has no record to run on, Bush released his latest misleading attack ad.  The American people understand that John Kerry knows how to defend our nation, and certainly won’t take a lecture from George Bush about protecting our troops.   Families are logging onto the Internet to buy body armor for their loved ones in Iraq because this President has failed to provide it for them.  George Bush himself opposed pay increases for our troops in combat, and gave no-bid contracts in Iraq to Halliburton, who grossly over-billed the U.S government.

“Let’s not forget how deep a hole George Bush’s stubborn and arrogant foreign policy has dug us into.  He’s squandered the goodwill of our friends and allies across the world, leaving our troops overextended in what looks like an endless occupation in Iraq.

“George Bush has lost credibility with the American people.  Because he stubbornly refuses to let go of his failed policies, America has lost 3 million jobs, health care costs have increased by fifty percent, and our record surpluses have turned into record deficits.

“It’s clear that Bush underestimates the American people.  No amount of paid television can wipe away the damaging effects of the last three years of stubborn, misguided leadership.  Nor can it restore the President’s credibility.  The American people want change, and John Kerry is ready to deliver that change.”
