So let me get this straight: John Kerry is a pathological liar. And why? Oh yes, because he doesn't want to embarass the nation further by revealing which international leaders support him as opposed to President Bush.

George W. Bush lied about his service in the Texas Air National Guard. He lied about the "Mission Accomplished" sign. He shamelessly misused our own intelligence services to dupe the country, and the world, into a war that has already cost us billions of dollars and over 550 American lives, not to mention the lives of an uncounted number (literally, since the Pentagon refuses to keep track) of Iraqi civilians.

But Bush doesn't want us to think about such troubling facts. In fact, he doesn't want us to think at all. And thanks to simpering editorials like Mr. O'Brien's, we don't have to.

I cced the guy who wrote it, and actually got a nice response from him. Didn't back down, of course, but at least he was polite.

Kerry has been slow to strongly defend himself against these attacks. The Bush people are trying to define Kerry as a weak foreign appeaser. Kerry needs to to stand firm on this issue.

It is, however, plainly true that there is major opposition to the Bush administration throughout the world and that many foreign leaders would rather have someone else in the White house. Poll after poll, even before the war in Iraq, has confirmed this. Unfortunately the political opportunists in the Bush administration are putting Kerry on the hot seat by calling on him to name exactly what foreign leaders told him this. This is an absolutely disingenuous tactic. Kerry will never name who these leaders are. When someone gives you information in confidence, as these leaders did with Kerry, you do not reveal them. When Kerry is elected the fact that he did not reveal their names will be a credit to his. It will bring him support with these foreign leaders for not betraying their confidence and it will portray him as a man of integrity.

That being said Kerry needs to come up with an effective response to these accusations. Cheney is apparently going to make a speech tomorrow afternoon that "tears Kerry apart on national security and foreign policy." (NBC) Kerry and his advisor's as well and all democrats need to stand strong and respond quickly and effectively to this speech. For many Americans not involved in the primary process this is the first they will see of Kerry. First impressions matter. Kerry need to make his own first impression or Bush will do it for him.
