for the truth from their regions about what the countries really think of Bush and if they want him to be elected.

.. the United States."

In response to Wolfie's question about "Did the terrorists win, by influencing a national election and toppling a government in the aftermath of a horrible terrorist strike?," Holbrooke responded:

"Well, George Will wrote in today's column in the Washington Post, that this is the biggest win for terrorism, with the most immediate consequences, that he believes has happened in history. I don't buy that. I think that the assasination of Archduke Ferdinand, in Sarajevo in 1914, which started WWI, was a much bigger event. I don't want to portray this as a triumph for terrorism. The terrorists that did this should not be encouraged; the American public will not react in the same way the Spanish people did. I understand George Will's point, but I'm not ready to share it."

25. Just imagine for a moment:
Clark and Holbrooke on the road in all the European capitols together. What a team!

There is story from one of the books, I think it's Holbrooke's, about a dinner party they attended thrown by an up up scale Washington maven. Anyway, much to the chagrin of the hostess, the dinner was disrupted when calls kept coming in from all over Europe. Finally, the woman enters her kitchen to find her star dinner guests: one on the phone speaking in French and the other frantically consulting maps they had spread out all over the kitchen.

A duo for sure.

It is time to get the cash clowns out of the White House.
