Update for DUers going to the NYC protests
Near as I can tell, it is going to be pretty futile trying to meet up at the protests themselves. Masses of people, etc. So a bunch of us (me, IrateCitizen, and several others) are gathering at a pub called '3rd and Long' at 3rd Ave and 35th St. The time to meet is 5ish, maybe closer to 6pm.

For those on the fence about going, or those who are going but are unsure where things are happening:

I'll see you there.

Just go there, man. I went to the one in NYC last April not knowing anyone, and ended up meeting PeteNYC and his girlfriend for the first time because they were carrying a sign with "DemocraticUnderground.com" on the back of it.

10. YES! I have posted in the Lounge - We can meet in front of Whole Foods
At 24th St. and 7th Avenue. Madison Sq. is at 23-26 St. & 5th - two blocks away. We can meet at 11:00 or so. What do you think? I live right down the street. I'd say to meet at my house but I have my mother staying here this weekend.

7. It'll be hectic as last February rather than nice as last March

Bloomberg had to prove his loyalty to his fascist protectors again (BFEE)
I will march, but won't be penned. When pens appear, I go home.
I'll be the one in purple hat and purple boa covered in buttons - mostly Clark buttons.
here I am at Code Pink March 8 2003 "Be fabulous as you protest war" event in front of Hillary's office march 8 - BC (before Clark)- hence no buttons

12. I got this email from Code Pink re pens
POLICE MAKE CONCESSIONS ON PENS The police and mayor's offices have been inundated with calls and faxes urging the police to not use their barricades to pen people in. Today we learned that the police have made important changes in their plans: While they will still use the barricades, we believe they will not be as oppressive as in previous protests. For instance, we will now be able to use the whole width of Madison Ave., and the sides of the pens will have some openings in order to make it easier for people to come and go. We still are opposed to the use of pens at this, or any, demonstration and we hope that these modifications in their use and our ongoing work to end the use of pens, will lead to further changes in the future.

At least they had the freedom to protest without pens.

Should make all Americans think...

I'll be at our "penless" protest in Edmonton.

25. from NYPD's site: THEY ARE FRENCH! ;-)

Barriers

Over the years, the Police Department has been replacing wooden barriers or “horses” with more reliable metal ones known as “French barriers” because of their initial use in Paris. As they were used on Wednesday for St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the French barriers will be used tomorrow for two reasons: (1) to keep intersections open for ambulances and other emergency vehicles; and (2) to keep sidewalks open for regular pedestrian use. Participants may come and go from their locations during the rally. Contrary to some critics, the barriers are not being deployed to restrict expression, but to ensure safety for demonstrators and the public alike, including the accommodation of those who still have to get to home or to businesses during the demonstration.

18. Cool, I'll be in the city tomorrow
I'm going to try to go to the labor starting place, hook up with some people who are supposed to meet there. I'll keep the DU thing in mind.

I just went out and bought a digital camera, a Minolta Dimage Z1. One reason is I wanted to take pictures tomorrow and put them on NYC Indymedia. It is pretty cool. Hope to see yous tomorrow.

24. NYPD sez: go to 42nd street
Edited on Sat Mar-20-04 11:39 AM by robbedvoter
http://nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/dcpi/march20rally.html

Best Bet: 42nd Street

While early arrivals may be tempted to go directly to 24th Street and Madison Avenue, please note that protest organizers said that 50,000 participants are expected. With this large gathering the best way to guarantee a place in the front of the march is by entering Madison Avenue at 42nd Street and walking south. Nonetheless, participants who approach Madison Avenue from streets further south will be accommodated on a first come basis. As Madison Avenue fills up with participants in advance of the march, those who opted to approach further south will be allowed to wait in adjoining side streets until the end of the march passes. Only then will they be allowed to join the march. In other words, the side streets will act as waiting lines for the march in progress. If participants do not want to wait in those lines, it is recommended they enter Madison Avenue at 42nd Street. The only side streets not available for waiting are 24th, 25th, and 26th Streets because they are reserved for police and organizers’ equipment, including the speakers platform that will be moved into place before and after the march.
