Should campaign contributions be tax-deductable?
I haven't really thought about this until just now, but would there be any advantage, society-wise, to encouraging contributions with a tax break? Pros and cons? Anyone ever thought about this?

1. they are a credit in Ohio
If you give money to state office candidates, you get a 100% credit to next years' taxes. That means it costs you nothing.

3. Weren't they in the early '80s?
At least up to $100.

I vaguely recall deducting these on my earliest tax returns.

I think it was one of those tax breaks that Reagan eliminated (like income averaging, deducting local sales tax, the medical deduction) - the ones that an ordinary working person with no kids could take advantage of.

5. I agree. Were that the case, I'd say yes they should...
But, as it is not, I would have to say no.

I would consider making tax contributions to a *general* campaign fund deductable, but those that go to a party or candidate not so.

7. I'd make them deductible up to $100
As a way of encouraging small contributors to get involved in the political system. I'd allow the deduction even if your don't itemize.

Lots of small money can counter the effects of big money.

6. it would enable those with big money...
the ability to turn their already maxed out legalized bribes into tax savings.

just off the top of my head:
maybe something along the lines of a tax CREDIT up to a $100 limit, which would be more apt to encourage the small donations from individuals.

9. In Oregon, there is a $50 (per person) political contribution tax credit
I always donate at least $50.

10. Yes if there is a limit - say up to $200.
Funding the political circus is done by the few who can afford it and the few that care. A tax deduction might inspire more voters to get involved.

11. No! It would benefit Republican BIG donors!
Not unless it's a small limit.
