As it turns out, there was a good reason Mr. Miller talked about his view of Mr. Kerry evolving over the last year or two. At Mr. Kerry's campaign headquarters, advisers took note of Mr. Miller's speech today and resurrected one of their own — Mr. Miller's introduction of the Democratic presidential candidate at a party dinner in Georgia back in 2001.
"My job tonight is an easy one: to present to you
one of this nation's authentic heroes, one of this party's best-known and greatest leaders," Mr. Miller said at the time, according to excerpts provided by Mr. Kerry's campaign.
"John has worked to strengthen our military, reform public education, boost the economy and protect the environment." A Kerry spokeswoman said the campaign was not too worried about Democrats for Bush. "Zell Miller's new leadership role will be a lonely post," said Stephanie Cutter in a statement that referred to the senator as "Zig Zag Zell."
