Bush pokes fun at himself at dinner
Thursday, March 25, 2004 Posted: 11:56 AM EST (1656 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush poked fun at his staff, his Democratic challenger and himself Wednesday night at a black-tie dinner where he hobnobbed with the news media.

Bush put on a slide show, calling it the "White House Election-Year Album" at the Radio and Television Correspondents' Association 60th annual dinner, showing himself and his staff in some decidedly unflattering poses.

There was Bush looking under furniture in a fruitless, frustrating search. "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere," he said.<snip>

8. Thanks! Watch the news crawl at screen bottom.
Thanks for making that available. I found the 'ticker' along the bottom of the screen to be particularly wrenching - showing *exactly* why Bush shouldn't have made the joke.

4. They say at the end "Is it appropriate to ever bring this up...
... a joke" (weapons of mass destruction).

I can already see the admin's defense: "Everyone else jokes about it! Leno, Letterman, etc..."

BUT the difference IS, that is satire, making the real point that Bush's main reason for war had no basis in reality. It is the place of writers, comics, cartoonists to criticize Bush on this issue and yes, sometimes using humor.

But for BUSH himself to use such jokes demonstrates how lightly he regards the issue, and how callously he approaches the war and the lives lost in it.

This is a BIG difference.

9. Must...Stay...On....Topic...!
I think that this is another distraction effort. View the video, spend five minutes on outrage, but then, let's keep pounding. Clarke! Right! Bush! Wrong!

We need to remind people that sure, Bush is a tasteless clown, but he is also an elitist, profiteering, anti-constitution, theocratic, criminal. That Bush is an incompetent loser who raised your state and local taxes by cutting taxes for billionaires and corporations. Bush failed to protect the US from terrorists on 9-11 and has done nothing to increase protections on vulnerable industries! Bush lied about WMD!

Ah, the charm of the sweet seduction of trivialities (Don't take that wrong -- it's only trivial in the context of the larger betrayals. )...
