Seems like the status quo so far.

7. Bush wins Missouri 54-46? Sure, it could definitely happen
Missouri isn't a culturally liberal state. No Democrat has gotten an outright majority of the popular vote in Missouri since Carter in 1976. Even Clinton, a moderate, struggled to get 48% of the vote. Kerry is perceived as being much more liberal than Clinton, and unlike Clinton, he isn't from the region.

Kerry, who opposes nearly every restriction on abortion, and nearly every use of the death penalty, is going to be a tough sell in Missouri.

8. It could be close again....
The Greens are a major party in MN (above 5% in previous elections), and could very well syphon off some of the left-leaning vote. The state DFL party is a mess right now, and who knows if they'll have their act together enough to get out the vote for Kerry.

Unfortunately, MN is very much in play this year, as we have a fairly popular Repub governor and a very well organized state GOP. The Dems, OTOH, are stagnant and flailing around at any old issue, trying to nail the GOP each time but failing miserably.

For example, the state DFL party funded an ad recently, attacking the governor for a tragic kidnapping by an in-and-out sexual predator. The ad basically said that it was the governor's fault that this guy was released after serving his time under the law, and that this young women would not have been kidnapped if he were not governor (btw, the woman is missing and presumed dead).

First of all, the governor is not up for re-election for another two years. Second of all, it's rather sick to try and pin such a tragedy on a governor who had little if anything to do with the actual crime.

Thankfully, state Sen. John Marty (a true progressive, ex-gubernatorial candidate, and DK endorser, btw) sent a letter to the state party, questioning the usefulness of this ad and calling them on their "Willy Horton-esque" tactics.

Unfortunately, the same DFL party that nurtured Hubert Humphrey, Eugene McCarthy, Walter Mondale and Paul Wellstone has sunk to such a desperate state of irrelevance that it's quite possible MN could go red next year-- something which hasn't happened since 1972.

Thankfully, we still have seven months to turn it around.

2. If memory serves me, those are all swing states.
So Iowa and Missouri are especially good news.

I'm not sure how reliable Rasmussen polls are though. Some say they are and others say they are not.

6. The 300 miles between Kansas City and St. Louis
and all of southern MO is prime Freeper country. I hope Kerry doesn't choose Gephardt as VP, he's certainly a decent guy but not VP material IMO.

16. VP material = able to help the prez get elected...
Ability to run for prez in 8 years is also a plus, something Gephardt doesn't really have.

5. I find that Missouri number hard to believe
Considering that the state's largest voting block, the I-70 corridor, is solidly Dem.

9. Why would you people not believe Missouri
It's pretty consisistent with other polls. Bush has a slight lean in every 2000 red swingstate, other than NH, FL, WV, and OH. Those 4 are tossups, not leaning either way. ALL the Gore-won swingstates lean dem right now, allthough PA and MN are right on the cusp of tossup.

I still have my doubts about Rasmussen, but, on the other hand, we may just have alot of inbred retards in our country.
